My Lavender d'Anvers are hatching, saw at least one chick this morning, under the Speckled Sussex hen. They should finish hatching out in the next couple of days. Keep your fingers crossed all 6 eggs hatch. (hoping they are all hens!!, I know a pipe dream with my luck) Got the leg bands on the newest Welsumer Pullets and will need to move them to the big Hen house tonight. The 12 Wheaten Ameraucana hatching eggs are going to be here tomorrow, so I have to get the hens set up for that. The 15 Lavender Ameraucana bantams will be here in a couple of weeks.... Oh, and the 12 d'Anver eggs I have in the incubator. The breeder gave these to me free... so I had to hatch them out. Was going to put 6 of the Large Blue eggs in there...but the timing is a bit off. Am running out of room!! LOL Did get a Rabbit hutch... but its no where near as large as the ones I had in Oregon or WA. That would of helped a lot. Can fit one Broody hen in it. Need to win the lottery, so I can get another hen house!! Once they feather out and a little bigger, none of this will be an issue but right now..... weeee........ This is the first batch... getting them hooked on Mealworms! LOL

Thank you Connor. The cream colored head one, is a Belgian d'Anver Millie Fleur. Here are some up dated photos. The First batch is now in the Bantam shed and happy for the extra room. This is the newest batch of Belgian d'Anvers.... Have two Lavenders, a Blue Quail, Quail and one that is yellow with a red blush on its head. Wasn't expecting a yellow,,, should of been a Blue Quail... so will see in time, what it turns out to be. As long as it is healthy and grows, I don't care. In this photo, isn't fluffed up yet. Only 5 hatched out of the latest batch of 12 eggs. Wish their was a way to improve how many hatch, because going the egg route... is going to be spendy!

Oh that first picture...Gorgeous! I am living vicariously through you I want you to know! 1st year I haven't had chicks-feels weird... Toying around in my head going the incubator route in the future-looks like I'll have a lot of resources on this board for help-especially you! Thanks for the update! ~Mari

Thank you Connor. So far, it looks like the first batch of d'Anvers (the darker ones)... are going to be all Roosters, including the Millies. "Might" be a hen in there, but I am pretty sure, that is wishful thinking. Hoping the 2nd wee batch (the two lavenders, one blue Quail, Quails and the little yellowish one... has some hens... little too early to tell. If not... think I am going to give up for now... Because this would be the 3rd year with getting just Roosters. Would like to find a blood line, that throws a lot of pullets. This is the mystery chick... should be a blue Quail... but not sure what color it is. Just hope it is a hen!!

I am seeing the same thing with my birds, so many roosters, very few hens. Mine are Silkies, Cochins, and Sebrights. All are hatching chicks, but only roosters this year!!
Your chicks are so cute!!

Nah, no such luck! I was SO hoping my grey Silkie chick that hatched out would be a hen.....nope, it's a rooster. Another rooster. Sigh. And out of my ten keets I store bought this spring, I only hear one with a two syllable sound. There had better not be 9 cocks in that group, boy will I be annoyed:-( But...hopefully the other hens I. That group are just shy and haven't found their voices yet.
All we can do is keep trying!

Will keep my fingers crossed for you, in hopes you will get some hens! Nothing worse, than having all Roosters hatch.

It almost makes me wonder how anybody gets any hens! My last batch I hatched was mainly barn mutts, but there were a few that are pure salmon faverolle. And so far it looks like those are all roosters. When I first ordered faverolle eggs, 5 hatched and they were all roosters. The only reason I have a hen is she was part of a sexed hatchery order! I have a hard time telling roosters from hens in the mutts till they get pretty far along, so I don't know the entire ratio yet. I have 12 total in my first group, and 16 total in my second. We all need to work on our hen dances! I enjoy hatching, but I'm thinking to realistically up my egg production I need to cave and order some hatchery pullets this fall.
