Thought pear tree was dead. There's a small piece growing out of side of tree; just above dirt level. Can main trunk be cut off and this part of tree will grow? Think I already know answer; just had to ask.

I would probably leave the trunk in case you need the support for the new growth. Can't hurt to try and keep it going.

If it is above the graft, you can let it grow. Prune to make this the new leader. If the sprout is below the graft, forget it and get a new tree.
