Should we wash avocados before cutting them, to get any yucky stuff off the peel or skin? Even if the skin won't be eaten? Not bananas, which are perfectly designed, but mangoes, oranges, other fruits and vegetables like potatoes
"Absolutely, you should be washing your produce, even if you're not eating the outside. The issue is that when you cut into it, you may drag any contamination on the outside into the flesh. But all you need is cold running water and a bit of scrubbing. No soap! Then pat dry with a clean towel." Becky Krystal, Staff writer, Food
I wash my hands with soap before I start food preparation. Nearly every time I finish with a meat, egg, or produce item or activity, I was my hands with warm water. But this is a bridge too far for me. I have never heard of a person getting sick, much less dying, from avocado yuck. I am a person who polishes an apple on my shirt sleeve and eats it on the way home from the grocery store. I have some natural immunity. I wish I had more. The less natural immunity, the more antibiotics. And BTW, if avocado skin has yuck, banana skin has yuck. If you peel a banana and the fingers that touched the skin, touch the banana, you're a goner.

The avocado dilemma doesn't affect me as I can't stand the stuff. I wash apples before I eat them, but I would never think to wash a banana! Just make sure that if you're using orange or lemon peal for the zest, that you buy organic and wash it!

I would not think to wash a banana, but would hold it by the peal while eating it without touching the inside with my fingers😅

countrymom22, we're in the same boat. I've tried avocado but can't stand either the texture or the flavor. I hated it when people used to push guacamole when avocadoes became more popular and available. Just wastes a good chip.
If I ate them, I'd be in the wash before eating camp. I washed melons and other fruit long before it was recommended. Bananas--nope, if you are halfway clever, you can eat the flesh without touching it.

There are lots of people, lots of flies, and lots of germs in the world.
Yes, you could eat a banana without touching it, if you don't need to break off an undesirable portion. But, on average, how many people a day, do you observe eating a banana cleverly?
