What has this special holiday got to do with gardening?
Well, I'm just in from hoeing my purple hull peas and corn and while I was out there, I was thinking about all who sacrificed so much that I can live in the freest society since the dawn of humankind. Thank you, ancestors both men and women.
On the downside, we have some neighbors (like their place is adjacent to ours) who spend a boatload of money on fireworks for a display that lasts from dusk to about 10:30 or 11. It terrifies our dogs who otherwise fear nothing. Despite having gotten some rain the last few days, it's not been nearly enough to reduce the fire danger if an ember falls into flammable debris (had that happen during the drought years when we lived north of Kansas City). I've spoken to him about the risk to any veterans with PTS within earshot. Not just those folks, but I learned recently that a friend about 60 miles away was a child during the Blitz by the Germans on London and she spent a lot of time in bomb shelters. SHE suffers this time of year and at New Year's. Don't mean to be an old curmudgeon but I've always thought that my right to swing my fist stops before it reaches someone else's nose.
Since I still have hoses strung out around the yard to water various gardens, we're going to leave them until after the holiday just in case we do have a natural cover fire to fight before the fire dept. gets here.
Anyway, a very happy and safe Independence Day to all.

I feel the same way about fireworks. My dogs are terrified. When I was working with horses, they were terrified. The little ones can't sleep through them either. Between the people with PTSD and the kids on the Autism spectrum who usually have an issue with loud noise, I just wish they would stop.
