Took my first watermelon off the vine. Pretty good, but the outer edges not as sweet as the center and there were about 4% white unripe seeds. It was about 95 days from planting. How do you decide when to harvest a watermelon?
(All the other melons, planted same day, are way behind that one. Crimson Sweer, 100 days on seed packet)

The spot on the underside where the melon rested on the ground should be yellowish and the tendril opposite the stem should be well dried, even having fallen off. So explained the guy at the produce market in town to another buyer within my hearing yesterday. He didn't hold thumping in high regard. I used it to select my watermelon so we'll see how accurate he is.

Generally, subject to shape and size, a deep (bass) thump sound means too ripe. A light (soft) thump sound means not ripe enough. To hone this down, thump every watermelon before you cut it open. Over a season or two you will learn what your favorite type of sound is.

My slightly underperfect melon had a brown tendril for a week plus already; will use "well dried, even having fallen off" for the next one. SCIENCE!
