We have well water. We also have a water softner. What is the best soap scum & iron deposits. We've been here almost 34 years. We've on are 4th water softner. Have tried every cleaner. Just spent 2 hours scrubbing today. I'm getting too old for this crap. The shower was here when we moved in. I would replace it but it's small so hard to find & husband's arthritis is too bad to do it.

When one gets old there's a whole lot that you can't change and just have to put up with.
That might be a fitting epitaph for my tombstone, "He just decided he wasn't going to put up with it anymore."

Just re-read my post. I want to clean the shower. The silver in my hair also gets funny. I bought the shampoo made to take out the minerals. It made my hair like straw. Any suggestions

We have the same problem. We have a Waterboss softener. It's going on 16 years old and is losing its edge. Our water is so hard this softener shouldn't even work. But our shower has never looked like the inside of a pumpkin ever. Not like the old house where in 30 days everything was orange. Also you can forget the laundry in the washer and it doesn't stink in a few hours. I like the soft water. As far as cleaning iron stains off, I've never found anything that works without some elbow grease, unfortunately. The best stuff was always a lung burner but always required some scrubbing. I found if I leave it build up, the wife will eventually break down and scrub it off.

I'm still looking for a concoction, either DIY or store bought that can be sprayed on and rinsed off. I think I tried most of the YT formulas. Some worked some didn't. All required scrubbing to various degrees. I made some strong ones with muratic acid. A real eye and nose burner even with good ventilation. Come to think of it, I know a couple that have a commercial cleaning business, I'll ask them what they use. I'll get back to you.

If you have a fiberglass shower, use a marine boat hull cleaner like the one below.

Ok, how do you tell? Husband doesn't know either. Would it hurt if it wasn't fiberglass?

Okay, I have an old 1920’s porcelain tub. It is Impossible to clean! I too oldone, am getting oldER & can’t scrub like I used to. A body wash I use even stains it. That comes off easier than the rest. I’m ready to get “ Bath Fitter “ here. My neighbor got that years ago & it cleans perfectly and easily with Windex.

If you have a fiberglass shower, use a marine boat hull cleaner like the one below. If you have a septic tank, you want to be careful about running acid into it. Acids also aren't good for cast iron drain pipes. You can neutralize it with some baking soda before you let it go down the drain.

Acids also aren't good for cast iron drain pipes. You can neutralize it with some baking soda before you let it go down the drain. The solids in a septic tank have a ton of neutralizing power. As long as a family is cleaning the shower no more than once a month, the septic system should be fine.

I had a pumpkin orange toilet. Forced out as much water as possible with a plunger then poured in a gallon of distilled white vinegar. I let the bowl refill to its normal depth and left it. An hour or so later, I swished it out with a toilet brush and the stain was gone. It eventually returned but still--no scrubbing, no eye-burning chemicals? Easy enough to repeat.
With vertical shower walls, could you saturate paper towels with DWV and "paper" the shower walls and worst areas to hold the vinegar in place?

I've sprayed vinegar on it it before. Did help a little bit. I'll try it. Thanks

oldone, perhaps you said this elsewhere regarding your water set-up but I worked in the water conditioning business early on. One normally puts an iron filter inline before the softener and if needed, after it. Much cheaper to replace the filters than the machines.
Hope this helps.

Thank you. Ours is after water softner. I told hubby. He said he'd check into it.
