I finally pulled the trigger on this year's garden. Yesterday I decided that the seeds started indoors just had to go outside. I had tomato plants that had to be staked in the house and cucumbers that were already reaching out with their little tendrils looking for support. So I spent a few hours planting everything before the rain started. Now it's been raining all night and it's supposed to continue all day today and tomorrow as well. A nice, gentle rain. So I'm just hoping for the best. It's still a little early to be planting here, but these plants were just too big to be carried inside every night and outside every morning.
Wishing everyone a bountiful garden this year!

I just got ours in, too. Most I direct sow. My tomatoes were not nearly as large as yours, countrymom22, but my peppers were very happy to be in the outside soil. This year I have added rows of flowers to help bring in pollinators. We are at the earliest safe time to put in the garden. But looking at the long range forecast it appears to be a reasonable gamble for this year.

Tallpines, I'm in western central New Jersey. Still a little early for us, but I just couldn't wait. So far, so good. Everyone is looking happy and well watered thanks to the rain. I still need to finish planting the onions and direct sow some green beans. And find a few corners to tuck the last of the marigolds I started into.

I had frost two days ago. 20+ years of gardening in a cold zone 3 has convinced me I can't plant anything too sensitive before first week of June. And that's no guarantee. I definitely need a greenhouse. So far the garlic I planted last September is up and growing fast thanks to a warm short winter. All the onion and shallot starts were planted a couple weeks ago. First time for shallots from seed. I've been growing these for 15 years or so and last year was the first time some of them went to seed. So why not try from seed too. I'll plant bulbs today. I have no idea what kind they are but they're approaching being a landrace now. I also planted 4 15 gal tubs of potatoes. I've been using bags with some success, tubs should be easier. 15 gal is probably too big. 10 would have been fine. I did get some of those but they're reserved for tomatoes and peppers. I planted squash last year on top of post holes around two feet deep. I stuffed the bottom third with compressed chicken coop hay, used a round wood fence post to really compress it. That acted as a sponge, then filled filled the rest with questionable compost, I think there was some rabbit droppings in there, some magic fairy dust ( wood and bone ash ) and planted on top of that. The Delicata squash loved it. That's it so far for this season. Frost, deer, slugs, and canary grass has been the biggest challenges on this piece of real estate.

I finally finished planting the onions and marigolds this morning. I was going to plant the green beans, but I decided to give it another week as the nighttime lows are still going to be a little too low. Everything else in the garden is doing well. Should have our first ripe strawberry by the end of the week!
