I have NZ, Calis, Champagnes and Silver Fox does. How big, how deep and what shape nest boxes would work best for my rabbits?

9 inches wide, 16 inches long 9 inches tall should work.

Will a plain open top box work or do I need a cover over half of the box?

Some use open top, most like a cover over part of the top. Build your box, but slope the sides. Measure 5 inches up from the bottom at the front, then measure in about 6 inches from the back along the top. Now draw a line connecting those two points. Cut that little angle off and attach all the pieces.

My husband used wire for the bottom of the boxes. It was 1/2inch×1/winch, though we also have some 1×1/2 bottoms. It keeps the nest from getting soggy.
In the winter, we just set it on top of a piece of cardboard.
