Thanks for the link... Did some other reading as well. I feel sorry for the kids that work so hard and are so proud of their poultry-but I guess it is for the best! Crazy world we're livin' in... ~Mari

It sounds like Indiana isn't the only state - Iowa, Montana, Minnesota, too. Wondering if WA is going to do the same thing, with 2 strains found in the state this year.

Vary sad. I also feel bad for the kids who work so hard to exhibit...but it is for the best right now, and that is a lesson for them to learn...

It's also going to start affecting things you wouldn't guess. So many of the food processors use dehydrated egg products in their batters, breadings, recipes, etc. I am in the food industry and even Tyson is putting out letters outlining the extent of damage. And, you guessed it, there will be more price increases. Wait until you see what is going to happen to chicken pricing....but you already knew that! LOL

*"The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has issued an order banning all live fowl competitions at the Great New York State Fair and at all county fairs in New York, Commissioner of Agriculture Richard A. Ball announced today. The order is the direct result of the continuing spread of strains of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the Midwest.*
**At this point this ONLY effects the state and county fairs**
I'm expecting Vermont to follow suit at some point soon.

This is letting me know raising my own fowl is the only way to stay healthy....Can that disease come to one's place WITHOUT THE PURCHASE OF NEW FOWL?

Also brought in by people. Use footbaths and keep people who don't have to be near your birds far away from them.

Just heard today that they canceled all poultry shows in Kansas too.

I honestly think, a lot of this is being spread by the inspectors going farm by farm.
Also hear of a lot more fairs that are not going to do poultry shows this year. Some States are starting to shut boarders down.
Why isn't any of this on the news?

I was wondering why it isn't on the news as well.

I wonder why we haven't seen more coverage of this on the news, too. There's been a little, very little, but people are more interested in why our regional NAACP leader is claiming to be black, when she's white (she resigned today, BTW). Between that and 24/7 coverage of the prisoner escape in NY, I guess there isn't any room on the broadcasts for bird flu!

Maybe they don't want to panic the city people? Or they think us all too stupid to handle it?
