My daylilies have gotten very thick with fronds. (Is that what we call those?) I was waiting for them to brown away last fall, and the weather got here too soon. Two things: Why would some of those fronds be broken off right at the ground? Can I dig, separate and move around now, or should I try to wait (again)? Thanks.

Best in the fall, the plant has stored up for next year. I dug mine up last fall and they are very vigorous and lots of bloom stems, haven't bloomed yet. They do get overgrown, the crown get pushed up and causes less good root growth. I mixed in a good layer of compost and a layer on top, keeps the ground softer for easier growth. Sold about $35.00 of good starts at the garden club sale and my beds look a whole lot better. I dig them about every other year, same as glads....James

You can dig the whenever you want - you'll lose the blooms this year though. Dig them up and let them set for an hour or so. Then use 2 potato forks to pry them apart.
Are fronds broken off due to something stepping in the middle?
