Would anyone tell me (in lay terms) what the bird flu means to me with my tiny backyard flock? What do I need to do to prevent my flock from being affected? What would I need to look for? Also, what does it mean for myself and family? thanks in advance for any info. I am in North Carolina if that has any bearing.

We have several threads on this with links to what you are asking. I am on my iPhone so I cannot link it but I know that I started one called avian flu in the poultry section. Hope that helps.

There's really nothing you can do unless you want to keep your birds totally isolated in a "bio-secure" setting in which they have no exposure to wild birds that can carry the disease.
There have been no cases that I know of in NC so far

I have no way to keep mine away from any wild birds. So I just keep them as healthy as possible, keep their coop clean.
No longer feed wild birds. And just keep my fingers crossed.
