Happy Dance...
The Large Wheaten Ameraucana chicks are just starting to hatch. Maran hen, has hatched out one so far. Just a day early.
No chicks yet, from the batch that are under the Speckled Sussex. Keep your fingers crossed she is not one of the ones that ate chicks last year!
Split the hatching eggs between two broody hens.
Will try to get photos later.

Thank you!
So far, think 6 have hatched.... one I found on the outside the the SS nest box, so I put what chicks she has hatched, in with the Maran. Hard to get a good head count, when most of them are under the Maran's petticoats. Plan on sitting with them later today and see if I can get a good count of the chicks.
Now, I am deciding, wither I want to keep them with the Maran hen, or bring them in the house ?

I had 9 of the chicks hatch so far... only 8 are alive right now. Kat sent me 14 eggs. So not a bad hatch so far. Maran hen kept loosing track of the chicks, so I just brought them into the house. Not that I really have room with all the bantams, brooding in the house already... Really did not want to take a chance loosing any more. The SS hen, still has some eggs under her, and if more chicks hatch, will bring them into the house too. Maybe when I am better set up, will try to have the broody hens raise them. They are as big as the bantams that hatched in May, so they should do ok. Have them in their own little box for a couple of days, then I will move them in with the bantams.

Thank you.
I bought some Bantam Ameraucana chicks last year... raised them up.... they are the most sweet and gentle chickens... even the Roosters. So I am hoping... the large version will be like that too.
And... folks like the blue to blue/green eggs.

The other 5 eggs haven't hatched yet. Will give them one more day.
8 chicks isn't to bad, out of 14 eggs. Now keeping my fingers crossed, most of them are hens!!!
Plan on taking some more photos later today. VBG

Chick fever!!! Oh my, I love the babies! I hope one of my broody hens will actually hatch an egg this spring, so far only two chicks have arrived, several weeks apart. One is a lovely grey Silkie rooster though, I am pretty tickled with that one:-)
