The split pea soup thread made me think of my weekend pea-planting fun. As I was poking peas under the soil, I thought of how I still have a lot of frozen peas from 2014. Would these still can ok? How about as soup or soup base?

If the peas had been blanched first, they would be considered fresh for most purposes. We still have some from 2012 which were blanched and packed in ziplock bags. No change in texture but just a little freezer taste. Canning them would be a bit redundant since they already were prepared for storage when packed.

I wish I had a REALLY definitive answer. I am assuming you want to can them instead of leaving them in the freezer too long? It seems split pea soup is always made with the dried ones. I was looking in my Ball Book and there is a recipe for herbed peas using shelled peas. I also checked my "Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving" and that has a recipe titled "Sweet Green Peas". Just not sure how the frozen ones would react? Maybe turn out even softer...Or who knows-maybe both of these recipes turn out kind of mushy because you are dealing with peas. I myself have never canned fresh peas-just split pea soup. Hopefully someone out there has done this and will respond-I would like a definitive answer myself! Sorry to ramble on... Regards, Mari

You could make a home made vegetable or vegetable-beef-or-chicken soup and then can that?

Maybe just me, but for 25 years of my life I thought canned peas and frozen peas were two different veggies! I haven't had a good yield on peas but the little I had went into vacuum bags and into the freezer. I wouldn't want to can them because they'd get all mushy and turn into 'that other' vegetable! Hah!

I'm with osiris on this one - love frozen peas, but those awful mushy canned peas? Blech! Of course, I don't like split pea soup very much, either. Yes, I'm a picky eater....<walks away, hanging head in shame>

Well I'm not that picky. I love split pea soup, just don't care for canned peas by themselves - of course you can always mix them into the mashed potatoes ;-)
