We had a hen hatch out two chicks and then decide to just leave the rest of the eggs she was sitting on. Then after a few days she abandoned the little chicks. One chick was very small and weak, but the other chick was big and strong. We brought them inside and got chick feed and started taking care of them. Big mistake. The little chick died the next day, like I said it was really weak. The other little chick thrived and the children took care of it everyday. Well, the other night we took it out and put it in the coop with the other chickens thinking it would just follow the flock when it woke up. Nope, it came straight back to the house in the morning and hangs out around the house and following us around the yard all day. In the evening it now comes up to the porch door and chirps as loud as it can until one of the children goes outside and physically takes it back to the coop. In the morning it is right back at the porch door chirping. This is the funniest thing I have every seen...I guess we now have a pet chicken. I sure hope nothing happens to it because we are getting awfully attached and this will be a great memory for the kids.

Yup, the wee chick zoned on people and now thinks it is a peoples.
Have you checked to see if it is getting picked on in the hen house? Normally the odd one out, tends to either get beat up or run off the food and water.

I've never really had a "people attached" chicken but I love the stories. Lots of chicken folk have a sort-of pet fave so you are in good company. Hope it lives long and gives you years of attention...but not noisy!

When my mother was a child, back in the 30s, she loved the baby chicks. She had a few imprint on her and would follow her everywhere. One met it's end in a slamming screen door; another crossed over after wandering under my great-grandmother's rocking chair. Sounds like now you have a pet chicken.
