I have several peonies that are very old - at least 50 years - and they are being strangled by bishop's weed. I would like to move them, but I suspect that the root system is very extensive. I would not be able to dig the entire root.
My question is, can I take part of the root or will that insure the plants demise? I don't want to just mow them over or let the bishop's weed kill them as some of them were planted by my dear Dad and some by my beloved Aunt Fannie.

You could do as I did when I had to move a monster thing which had been steadily expanding for 40 years. Had to move it to make way for new city sidewalk. Idea was to move it to a safe place in the back lawn. That meant attempting to dig it as one huge rootball and move it to the new location intact. Took some doing to get it out of the ground but that was finally accomplished. No carrying that monster and nothing available with wheels to move it so I decided to roll it. By the time I got it moved the 100' or so, it had become two smaller halves and various individual roots scattered along the way. Result was that I had to dig a second hole to accommodate what was now two separate colonies and the odd ones went to at least NC, OK, and VA via HT. Since it was early May, none skipped a beat and bloomed as if nothing happened.

Oh, Martin, that is what I wish I could do, but I am not young and strong enough to do that by myself. I just wondered if I could dig what I can and not kill the whole plant. It sounds like they can take a beating and not suffer too badly and that is what I was hoping for.
Thanks for the story!
