Well, it is muggy enough here that I am going to put the window AC in the kitchen & bedroom. We got another round of storms through the night. I woke up to the rain pouring (into the windows). I never liked AC much because most people keep their house entirely too cold & I don't like that big of a temperature change when going in & out. However, the older I get, the more I don't like the humidity. We may eventually break down & get central air. I set the AC on about 78*. Not a lot cooler than outside, but it takes the humidity out.
It is a cloudy, rainy day here today. Going to stay inside & get some things done in here today.

We had our central air unit removed last winter when we had a new furnace installed. It was so old it scared us. We never even tried it to see if it worked - figured if we did, the electric meter would peg. While we do occasionally get 90 degree days here, that's just it - very occasional. We figured since we have a finished family room on the lower level - which is always a good 10 degrees or more cooler than the rest of the house in summer - if we do get hot humid weather, we'll just kind of live down there until it passes. We have a bathroom down there now, as well as a "kitchenette". So life below grade is very doable. Now when we lived in the southern part of the state, which had some hot humid summers...well if anyone had ever tried to take away my air conditioning, I might have hurt them.

We don't have an air conditioner. We did in town, needed the electronic filter system for allergies. Both of us and DS outgrew our allergies. Cottonwood trees were thick in our neighborhood and were awful when the cotton blew. I have a touch in early spring and try to stay out of tall grass when pollen is bad. DD still needs it, why she still lives there. It is cooler today, I worked on DDs duplex until noon, just got home, took shower, almost too cool sitting here in shorts, nice breeze through front door....James

I would be a very unpleasant person if I didn't have any a/c. It's so hot and muggy down here.

We just gave in and turned our AC on this past weekend. 90+ degrees and high humidity from all the storms and it was sticky and yucky here. We have a lot of cottonwoods and way too much pollen altogether for me here. I was having some significant breathing problems before we turned it on, but I am feeling much better now. We keep ours set on 75, and turn it up to 78 if the humidity is not too high. I also don't like a huge temp difference when I go outside, it seems I get overheated too fast when the AC is set too cold.

We start growing mildew....everywhere. So when things start feeling constantly damp it is time to turn on the AC. We set ours on 78.

I lived for about 65 years without A/C. Relied on fans to cool the house in the evening and live with whatever day temperatures bring. Sometimes meant that I was sitting in front of my typewriter wearing only shorts and a towel around my neck to catch the sweat. Decided that I didn't have to live like that anymore and bought a window unit. Wife and I can both handle 75º with no problem so that's what we aim for. Outside temperature has to be over 80º before I'll kick it on. Don't care what anyone may say, I ain't going to live without and don't have to.

I seem to have developed really bad allergies year round about 5 years ago. (When I was at my thinnest so weight did not "weigh in" to that development). Anyhow, I need to have the a/c on even when I don't want it just to clean the air.
But Martin I am with you- lived without a/c for decades other than at the office (and froze there!) Now, I need it for allergies and want it at night to sleep.

The dehumidifier up and died...recently. We were gone for two days and it was doing the humming/buzzing thing when we got home. Humming, buzzing - but not dehumidifying. I can live without air conditioning up here in the northwoods as long as I can keep the humidity out. The dehumidifier is a necessity. The old one was just that, OLD. I do believe a trip to Menards is in our immediate future.

Hopefully your new dehumidifier will be more energy efficient at least. Of course no one needs the cost of replacing old/broken appliances. We only have window units for ac and only run them in the rooms we are in. I would rather sleep with fans, but some nights they are just not enough with the humidity. The last few nights have been nice/dry sleeping weather, but it's raining again now, so the humidity is really high and it's suppose to rain all night. But it is only in the high 60's, at least.
I'm finding as I get older, I'm less willing to do without the ac. Hubby works outside all day, but he sure does appreciate coming home to the ac.
Stay cool everyone!

I am in the Pacific Northwest so we rarely need air conditioning. However today is another story. It is 102 degrees right now. We have a ductless heat pump that does a marvelous job when we have this kind of weather which is about 25 degrees above our normal temps.

I think that the A/C has been on in my house since the temps started going into the 90's sometime around the end of the first week of May. The average high in June so far is right around 97*F. Several days already have broken 100*. And the humidity has been horrendous!
Rain??? Almost non-existent except for the infrequent, short downpours where most of the rainwater quickly washes away. Have only received an inch in the last three weeks and that inch of rain fell in less than 30 minutes. I have watched the rain clouds coming my way on the radar only to dissipate just before reaching me and then forming up again after passing me or just missing me and my garden by less than a mile. I have come to the conclusion that I live in some kind of rain shadow, but I am simply unsure of what the cause is.
The only thing that has kept my garden alive this year is the 1200 or so gallons of stored rain water that I can hold. And that is almost dry again with no real rain possibilities in the near future.
Wonderful!!!

I have a little window unit that only fits in the master bathroom window. I haven't put it in yet this year, even with the hot temps, as the house only gets to about 80 before the temp is equal with the outdoors, and it's cooling off nicely at night. When and if I do finally get it popped in, I close the door between the "master suite" and the rest of the house. It's nice to have one cool spot to escape to when it's just too hot. Right now, that spot is the pool!
