At present on our Cabin have about 50 Gallon Barrel we put water in during warm weather. Have 110V. RV Pump to pump water to Sink and 10 gallon Hot Water Heater. Have Composting Toilet.
Thinking of switching to 200 Gallon Tank and put in Regular Flush Toilet, running into a Holding Tank we will have to put in.
Thinking of Insulating the Water Tank and using Heat Tape between Tank and Cabin, keeping the Cabin between 40 and 50 degrees. Might not be there for a week at a time so water won't be running in the system regular. Very seldom gets below zero.
We could during cold weather drain and shut off Hot Water Heater and drain Main Tank. Flush Toilet by Bucket and put Antifreeze in before leaving. My wife is concerned about draining Hot Water Heater so often.
Will this work?

I would drain the tank, flush again with a gallon of water and crack drain open to slow drain and leave cracked open. Run waterline uphill so it will drain when you remove pump, drain pump and protect. Drain everything for off season. Get the lowest use toilet or put a bag of water in tank of older model. If no permit needed, put in septic tank with a short drain line. Pump every 3-5 years. Otherwise will need to pump tank when full....James

NO Septic Tanks.
Ok way it is now no problem draining the system because we haven't used the Hot Water Heater yet. This is what we are really afraid of at this time. Plus the Composting Toilet at this time makes things simple. Thinking later putting in a Shower, right now going to Shower House down the road.
Thinking could keep things warm while I'm using the Cabin. If it looks like it is really going to get cold make sure I get up there and drain everything. Mostly will be using it when Cold for Hunting from October to end of December. Most of that period shouldn't get that cold.
Plus if making trip up there to drain stuff could take Compressor and blow lines out.

With water heater you should have a backflow valve at water heater so if anything happens to pump, or runs out of water, it does not backflow and burn out element. Will need to pump holding tank, check cost. May as well insulate tank house and pump. Run waterline underground, back up under house and insulate that. Drain when closing up for winter or insulate cabin good and leave a small electric heater on to keep from freezing....James

Tank is going to set on Blocks or Pallets going to be most 8 inches from Cabin, line going directly into Cabin, pump in Cabin.
Could put a drain T between Tank and Cabin, should drain Tank and Lines at same time. During cold weather might not have it that full I'm going to have Gas Heat in the Cabin.
The Pump and Water Heater are bother just plugged into 110v. Outlet.

I personally like draining everything that holds water, and then using an air compressor to clear out the rest I made up an adapter to connect off the compressor to any outdoor water faucet, so now it is pretty easy

Was just talking with my wife been mild enough that things should be ok while I'm up there hunting that all should be well until I leave last of December.
Now she is worried about me in Small Boat hunting for Deer and Hogs. Checked Load Rating on it 460 pounds. Funny in past never worried about it and had it loaded much heavier.

You can never be too careful out there by yourself. You do have to think about the ones you love....or love you.
Just got in from a possible suicide. 2 day manhunt. Everyone thinks a 67 y.o. local man went off to do himself in. Found his truck, on Friday. Tracked him for 3 miles out into the woods, just vanished after that. Even the dogs can't find his scent. Been on too many of these, just to find a body. This one hits clost to home, known him for 35 years....James

Why? Sounds like you have a good working system and only have to deal with composting the waste. Going with a flush toilet (which can be a lot of water usage) you now have to deal with the holding tank (sounds like it will be a lot more work than occasionally emptying a composting toilet). Are you only putting in the holding tank to deal with black water?

With it being that close, I'd build a heavily insulated enclosure to house the tank, and heat it in Winter with a couple of light bulbs and a "Thermocube" to keep it above freezing.
As long as there is power, you won't have to deal with draining the system at all

I went to HOA they said it wasn't and my toilet was just fine. So you are right it would be stupid to change. Rockpile
