We had a large series of storms come through the area last night, complete with large amounts of sheet lightening and torrential downpowering.
The streams were overflowing their banks and flooding of roads and low-lying areas was very prevalent. In fact, I'd be willing to bet, that this would
be what is considered a 100 or even a 500 year event. Never seen the like in my lifetime, neither has my dad. His footbridge that I built probably 40 yrs
ago with the main supports out of 8 foot creosoted rail ties, was washed downstream!!! I have yet to spot where the ties ended up. Of course this same
creek overflowed the dike that I'd made to contain it and separate from the recent pond that I'd had dug.....no such luck there....simply unbelievable the might,
power and simple awesomeness of moving water and what it is capable of. Was talking to my sis out in California and mentioning that the lights had been flickering
on and off and it might be that we would lose power shortly and then the lights went out and stayed that way. Had about 2 more minutes of conversation with her
in the dark and then the phone went dead as well. Very uneasy feeling when you realize how very dependent one has become on the modern world and expect to use
an electrical appliance without thinking. Suddenly, I'm "THINKING" a whole lot more....(2) freezers, plus the one on the combo refrigerator that are packed to the gills.
No water as the pump runs on electricity and so that means having to think outside the normal parameters since the toilet ..... well, the tank could be used with creek water if necessary.
Also, what is to become of my 102 keets which just turned 6 days old and need heat lamps to keep them at a toasty 95 degrees? The inside temperature of the house was 78,
but dropped 3 more during the night, but I kept the water changed and filled the feeders as needed and they seem to have made it okay.....
with the exception of that one who has the deformity.....the rest seemed to have run him over and he's not well.
While the power was still out, I debated on keeping them inside the house, in their ever-smaller cage or to transfer them outside to a twice bigger one,
as it's a beautiful sunshiny day with the temperature over 80. Had just made the last transfer and had come inside to get something else and the lights had
come on while I was out. So now I'm wondering if I should bring them back in.....decisions...decisions.
A lot of catching up to do now. I'm heading for the bathroom right now. Priorties ya know.
Will check in later to see how others are faring as well.
