We planted 2 year asparagus in 2014. This being the third year we did not eat any. It is now tall and thin ferns. What do we do now so that we can harvest next spring? Do I cut the ferns in the fall? Cover for winter (central Indiana)? I am keeping the bed weeded now but am at a loss as to what to do next!

I wait until the ferns dry up in the late fall. Cut them off and then cover the whole bed with 6" of horse manure. Come early spring I just scrape it to the side. Kept my bed producing for over 20 years.

We planted 2-year roots last year also. I'm just keeping them mulched: a layer or shredded leaves in the fall, a layer of grass clippings this spring. Hope it will pay off next spring!

Also regarding asparagus - I bought the 2 year roots early this spring to be planted in early spring according to the package but I missed my window of opportunity. Can I plant them in the fall?
