Is this a type of foxtail? I've spent most of the morning googling pics and I'm still not sure what it is. The height of the plant to the top of the seedhead is almost 5 foot.

There is a giant foxtail which can get that big. I've seen it here and the seed heads look very much like that. For certain, you've got hundreds of seeds in that head.

Huh thats not the half of it. We've got a whole potato patch full of it. DH is thinking about mowing off the whole patch and calling it quits this year. With all the rain he's had a hard time keeping up with things.

Just mowing won't prevent it from increasing more next year. Those seed heads are far enough developed to produce a lot more. Mow, remove, and burn would help. They are an annual and emergence is usually over a short period in the spring. Going through with a hoe every few days will kill each plant. They need light to germinate and potato growth would prevent a lot more for that year. Let just one go to seed and you start all over with the same amount next year.

Be really careful of your dog's feet with foxtail. The "barbs" can work their way into the tender part of the foot and fester. Had that happen. Poor puppy! Just an FYI since you have so many.
BTW: I'd burn the suckers! They're terrible.

Not to start any controversy but I think DH is planning to go full nuclear on them. He wants to sterilize the ground this fall using herbicide. We've never had this type of problem before, have had oats and wheat come up from using the rabbit manure on the garden. Those I could just pull up and feed back to the rabbits. This stuff is almost 5 feet tall and can hide an army.
