I've posted several times; about how bad soil is here. Clay/Sand The one thing I've found that will grow is Hostas. I'd like to make this are look like it was Professionally landscaped. Don't know where to start. Do I put down some kind of soil amendment; landscaping fabric, then mulch? Know many of you are really good at this. I just need a place to start.

My country place has lots of clay and pretty close to the surface. I made beds that I dug down maybe 12 inches, which was about as far as I could dig before running into shale layers. I edged them above ground with barn boards some 10-12" wide, since I had a bunch. I filled the whole works, now some 20" worth, over and over with raked leaves, kitchen waste, and chopped weeds before they seeded. when I stumbled across things like torn peat moss or topsoil bags that the garden store was selling for not much, that went in there. Think "giant nutrient-rich plant pot".

You could also try growing seaside plants, they will often grow happily in pure sand. ornamental grasses can cope as well..
