Just got finished locking up tonite about 30 minutes ago... Was thinking about a lot of you guys and how your holiday was going... I can hear fireworks in the distance-'course we are here at home because of the chickens... AND I didn't get out of the field driving the baler 'til around 8pm or so... I'm so tired... No holidays out on the farm!!!
SO-when you lock up-Do YOU say "Goodnight!" to your chickens?! I always do... Maybe I am a complete nutter... Or maybe it's because I never had kids-and these guys are my "substitutes"...

I never tell my chickens good night, I just remind them that every one has a job on this farm, their choice, a eggs every day or a long hot soak in a pot...

I don't tell them goodnight as they're always on their perches when I shut them in, and I don't want to wake them up, but I do say goodmorning ladies.. does that count?

I don't say "goodnight" to mine but I do talk to them when I give them treats I mix up,which is almost daily.That's when they talk to me directly to me too...I enjoy those happy sounds a lot. I did go out tonight with all the local popping and bangs and dogs barking and howling going on. I heard some clucking over there in the dark and after I told them everything was OK they stopped so I think that was a good thing to do.  |

Okay, so if that makes you a nutter, I'm one too. I have total conversations with mine. The older, more mature flock has an entirely different conversation than the flock of youngsters. These days, much of the conversation is "Are you going to be the rooster we keep?" One barred rock/RIR fellow is really campaigning for the job with a ton of friendly at my feet.
I talk to the turkeys, too. And the horses, cats, and dogs. They speak with their bodies, their eyes, and attitudes. Most are more intelligent and conversational than some humans I know.
And yes, I eat the poultry.

Nut here also, I talk to mine all the time....Of course I sell mine as layers getting ready to start laying and nothing better then selling chickens that are friendly, I also have radio on for them 24/7  |

My big hens... I don't say anything.... Just shut them in.
Now the two I tiny d'Uccles that are still brooding in the house... I say good night to them. LOL

We always let ours out to free range when I get off work. We usually feed them snacks. Of course they love that! I have a smaller puppy that has grown up with them and he loves to be around them. One of my girls likes to chase him around. It's so cute. He's very gentle with them. I don't usually tell them goodnight but they do enjoy our little evening routine!

And yes, I eat the poultry. I really liked your post... That is so much "me". We are very close to our animals... We have totally awesome chickens, cats, and a dog... And I attribute a lot of that to our very close interaction with our animals... I believe in being a good steward (well, and then some!) to the animals in my charge... |

No good night, but I do thank the chickens, ducks and turkeys for giving us eggs and tell them to keep up the good job. Of course I am sure they know if they don't produce they are going to get a free all expenses paid vacation to freezer camp!

My 16 yr old always helps me with the evening chicken chores. He likes to pick them up and say goodnight to each of them :-) I always tell them good morning when I let them out. They are sweet birds, very friendly and seem very happy!

I am just a nut, too! I tell my birds goodnight, my horses and donkeys goodnight, my dogs goodnight. They all get it, it is time to sleep now...then in the morning I always walk out to the hill and yell to my horses "good morning guys, I'll be down in a minute", and they all head to the corrals for breakfast:-) When I say that, my birds all know I am headed their way and they start talking up a storm:-) Gotts love ranch life!!

I just did when I locked my chickens and ducks up. I always tell them good night and tell them good morning, when I let them out. I talk to all of our animals. They are a part of our family.  |

Does telling the roosters to hush up at 4:30 am every. single. morning., count? I do thank my girls for their eggs. They work hard for me, and they deserve a little gratitude. Of course, the slackers get that little lecture about freezer camp, lol. |

My chickens and Turkeys know the words, OUT and OFF ! As in get Out, of the hay shed, I point and say OUT.... they leave. On the Porch, I say OFF, and point... they all know to get off the porch.

LOL LOL! Mine know the words "Go in, go in, go in", and "coop, coop". In the evening I start calling "go in go in go in", and my guineas come from every direction towards the coop as fast as they can. Then I say "coop coop" and they take about 20 minutes to sort out who gets to actually go in first, who is next, etc. Then the last rooster goes in, and then I chase my young Guineas in, and then I close the door. |
