Anyone else having a large amount of tomato hornworms this year? Seems like last year I hardly had any and this year I am picking off around 15 per day. I have 2 tomato plants that have been decimated and seem to attract the most hornworms. I have picked as many as 6 off of these two plants. I have picked so much that now I am down to the little bitty brown ones that haven't matured and gotten big yet. Even though I am diligent about picking these things are taking their toll on what would be a fantastic tomato crop. Now looking to be a mediocre tomato crop. Between these things and the stink bugs I might just lose my mind. Thanks, Kat

Used to have hornworms in abundance. A couple of years ago I noticed the hornworms had little white specks on them and folks said not to kill that hornworm as it was eggs from the prediture of the hormworms. They were right. Slowly the worms died off and have not had any hornworms since. Maybe this will help if you see the little white eggs on the backs of the worms. Jean

Finding those things on the plants is next to impossible for these old eyes! Haven't tried it yet as I've never really had too many over the years but using a UV light at night makes them easy pickins from what I've read. I feel your pain Kicker. I went over to my buddy's today and he had damage to several tomato plants that looked like hornworm damage. We looked for almost an hour and could not find anything, never mind a hornworm.
We did find numerous clutches of tiny, bronze colored eggs on his squash and zucchini plants though.

I think that is why I have not had many in the past...because of the braconid wasps. However, I have not seen a single hornworm this year with wasp eggs on it...Did Hank take ALL my wasps, good and bad? Yes, they are difficult to find especially before they have turned green. I think I have become an expert tomato hornworm tracker and hunter though. It doesn't take as long as it once did.
