Since my DH is working out of state I decided to grow 2 tomato plants & 1 grn pepper in buckets. They are doing terrible. The tomatoes are getting something that looks like blossom end rot when they are the size of quarters. The peppers are getting a rotten spot on the side when they are 1/2 to 3/4 grown. :-( I am so disappointed.

Last year, our container gardening was a complete failure! We learned. This year, we used Miracle Grow soil because of it's good draining. Last years soil was too heavy. We also bought large well started tomatoes~~one regular and one cherry tomato plant. I water every day or so. I use epsom salt solution every ten days and fertilize every two to three weeks.
Sadly, the cherry tomato plant has a mosiac disease and not doing well. It's been moved away from other plants and any tools, including my hands, gets washed after it is touched. The other plants are thriving.
May I add that perhaps your containers are too small. The root system is as large as the plant itself and i adjust the fertilizing and watering accordlngly.

Buckets are fine with small tomato varieties and then only if there are ample drain holes and over ground so that the tap roots can get out to find water. The blossom end rot comes as a result of wet-dry-wet conditions which exist in containers. I have to grow tomatoes in containers in much of my home gardens. There is nothing less than 7 gallons. The tap roots follow the water down to the drain holes and into the ground. If I note any sudden wilting, the containers are given a good twist to break off any roots. That's because a 40-year black walnut is living on borrowed time and will be firewood for someone next spring.

I grew those little tomatoes in a pot this year too. It was a part of a plastic barrel cut about a little less than half way up. I put rotten wood in the bottom of it and had drain holes cut in the bottom and drilled in the sides. It worked out good too. Didn't water it all that much unless it went several days to a week without rain. I think the wood in the barrel helped to hold in the water and that helped it out when I was too busy to.
