Well, now, see, that's another difference here - when we go hunting, we don't stand around or sit in tree stands, we actually HUNT for the deer, lol. Oh, gawd. <facepalm> Now you've done it.

Lol, yeah, I really did, didn't I! Can't resist poking the bear. Somehow, I think @trellis can take it...he dishes it out pretty well, lol.

Well, when there is a foot or more of snow on the ground with a quarter inch or so of ice on top of the snow the smart hunter does not do a whole lot of moving around. That crunch, crunch, crunch noise is a dead give away to the deer.
When the conditions are like that you just find a spot that offers some concealment, give a few grunts on the grunt call and see if anything comes near you.
Just saying....

Well, see, you have to have snow for that...it mostly rains around here, which tends to dampen the sound of moving through the woods. Just sayin... Yeah, I wouldn't be moving around if I was on snow or ice. Rainy, soggy ground is a lot more forgiving.

Actually, I love bow hunting when there is snow on the ground without the ice. I just put on some over-whites and I can get real close to the deer. Sometimes as close as 15 yards or so.
Remember, I hunt mostly with a bow and only really practice back to 50 yards. Most of my actual hunting shots are taken at a much closer distance simply because of all of the trees, bushes and branches in the way. I only hunt with a gun if I am really desperate to get something in the freezer.

We hit 98 yesterday. It was 75when we left for church a little after 7, but when we got 3miles down the road-and 1000feet lower, it was 56! I think all the smoke must be holding the heat in at night, there is definitely more smoke up here than in the valley. I sure wish it was cooing off more at night, the way it normally does. Our air quality is poor in places, according to the TV guys, I think this is one of those places. The smoke is mostly from the Lake Chelan Fire. Years ago there was a large fire at Lake Chelan and we got ashes as well as smoke. It is about100miles to Lake Chelan from here, as the crow flies, or smoke blows.

Hope it cools down for you soon, mollymckee. It's finally getting back to our more regular temperatures here, I'm happy to say. Never got above 75F yesterday, and we even had a few spits of rain throughout the day. The upcoming week looks pleasant. Maybe that's in store for you soon, too. I hope so.

We had a wind last night and it blew out some of the smoke. The temp went down to 68* last night and it is supposed to "only" get into the upper 80's today! The wind is supposed to pick up quite a bit so we have a red flag warning until tomorrow night. The are a few days with a slight chance of rain, but no major rain any where in the forecast.
Sunday my DH wanted to use a grinder on on spot on equipment he was fixing. It was in the morning so was okay to do with the hoot owl restrictions but he took a bucket of water with him. One spark started a fire in short grass, and he put it right out but it burned a spot 2x8 feet. If he hadn't been prepared it would have been out of control before he could have turned on the hose. He said he had heard that could happen, but had never seen it. He only touched the grinder to the metal, if he was not watching and doing a lot he could have had more sparks and more fires.

Another 1.1 inches of rain today. This burst took a whole one and 1/2 hours to fall from the sky. It really took its time compared to other rainfalls around here. I do not know what to do with myself since I have not had to water the garden in two days. I suddenly have a lot of free time.

Actually, it's been in the 83 range for a high the last couple days, which is where it should be in August here, and looking at the 7 day forecast, there appear to be a couple days with potential rain drops, fingers crossed. mollymckee, glad to hear it is a little cooler and you got some of the smoke blown out. I remember that Lake Chelan fire you mentioned. Drove through there a few years later and was amazed how extensive it was. Seems like if WA is going to be on fire, that area is going to be the first to burn. Thank goodness your dh took the time to draw a bucket of water before he started working...it really just takes no time at all to have a spark cause a major fire.

I know ya'll are suffering because you aren't used to it, but I sure do envy those cool night temps. I would love to have just a couple hours relief from the heat and humidity. Heat indexes over a 100 down here with humidity around 70% most days. Well, gotta get to work....it's already hot. Just do like we do down here in the deep south...take it one day at a time and spend the heat of the day inside or in the shade drinking tea. Siestas are not just for those south of the border. Blessings, Kat

Ahhhhhhh!
Now the weather is back to something resembling its former self.
I do not know what the humidity was today, but the temps hit 97*F today and the heat index was above 110*F. I think that the heat index hit 115*F for a little bit.
I drank about two gallons of liquid today and sweat out almost as much.
Today is the first day that I have had a massive headache since I do not know when. I am attributing it to the heat since the headache pretty much went away once I got into some AC.

@trellis, not liking your post for the headache, but for it going away! Did you do that rain dance for us? whisperwindkat, I'd never survive living where the temp and humidity are roughly equal - I'd melt, lol. I visited Dallas/FT Worth, Kansas, and Missouri one summer when I was 16, and the humidity was what I remembered...that and it not cooling off at night. I love that the humidity is pretty low here in the summer and that it really is cool at night. It was 42 last night. Bliss! It never reached the 80's today, thank goodness. It was 55 in the house when I closed things down, and never got over 68 inside. Very comfortable for house cleaning. Supposed to be a little warmer the next few days, but, gasp...it "might" rain this weekend. We shall see.

It only got up to 81 today, with pretty good wind. The red flag warning expired tonight and it is supposed to cool off. There are several new fires that started in the last few days. The closest is about 12miles from here. Unfortunately, we are getting smoke, just not as much as yesterday and Monday.

That headache sounds like a definite sign of heat issues. Careful with that or it will become heat exhaustion or worse. Had heat exhaustion 1 summer and haven't been able to tolerate heat extremes long since, it really does a number on you. As much as I complain about the heat, I would complain about the cold if I lived farther north, and after reading this thread I would wilt and wither away without sunshine in the PNW. I do so love their forests though and they seem so magical with all the moss and ferns.

manygoatsnmore We do melt and suffer many bad hair days and makeup is pointless because it will melt off your face 5 minutes after walking outside. Humidity was low today, so 98 felt downright nice. Don't know what the heat index was but probably not high since humidity was low. Hope it is like that today although we are getting to the point of needing a good rain. Ya'll take care up there I know this summer is really hard with the drought and the fires. Can't complain about rain too much for us because it has been pretty regular this summer for us, until this past week. Blessings, Kat
