Anyone have experience with keeping two breeds with pretty different characteristics? I'm thinking versatile gun dog, Munsterlander or Brittany with a Boerboel.

I’ve had border collie, Boston terrier, and papillon. As long as each breed is dog friendly, they will do okay. Dogs that get along the best are dogs from the same group. They understand each other. Collies will herd each other, other dogs don’t seem to care for that. Hunting dogs will follow scents together. I’m not sure about a Brittany, which is very gentle, with a boerboel. The boerboel is an aggressive and territorial dog who may be better suited to another mastiff type dog.

I have a Border collie/lab cross and a pug. one super high energy the other a sofa dog. they get on fine together, although one wants to cuddle and the other really does not. Outside. they can't do anything together, the pug simply cannot keep up, but tries anyway to the point of near collapse. in heat she would collapse if we let her get that far. the size difference doesn't stop them playing, but the X does have to limit how hard she tries and wait for the pug to catch up/grab hold. She also lies down so they can fight!

Collies and Scottish Terriers. The Scots have taught the Collies to hunt!

At one time there were Rottweilers, Akitas and Shelties running around the backyard. Everyone got along for the most part. Every once in a while a Sheltie would get a little uppity and think of itself as a Rottweiler, but that never lasted very long. I did sometimes wish that the Shelties would take after the Akitas and yap a lot less.
Overall, everyone got along and there were no real problems.

We have Goldens and Westies, have had Dobermans as well. When our oldest Westie lost his vision, our Doberman was his "guide dog" and it was hard to tell he was blind. They were inseparable in the last few years of the Westie's life. We have babysat our DDs Ausies who do work cattle on a regular basis and the dogs all get along. We kept a friends Rottie and Corgie and another friends German Shepared at the same time and they get along. If the dogs are all well trained and socialized they seem to get along okay to very well. The Corgie had a really nice bed in his kennel and there were generally several dogs in it (we left the door open, he just slept in it) he was fine with sharing. The only problem we had was keeping tract of all the dogs when we went for a walk, but they really were pretty good.

Oh gosh! I have a German Shepard, an English Bulldog, a Great Pyrenees, a Catahoula, and a cross of a Blue Tick Hound/Blue Heeler. Talk about a diverse group! They all get along just fine:-) I had two Dobermans a while back with the bulldog and shepard, they all did fine.

Thanks for the information to all. I feel better about attempting to do this.

We have a Jack Russell, an Australian shepherd and the new guy is a 90 pound shepherd/hound/bull mix. Their strengths seem to complement each other nicely for a full coverage team. New Guy dropped the paw on JRT's attitude problem on day 3, it straightened her right out.

I have a friend with 2 great danes, a golden retriever, a cocker spaniel and a Chihuahua. They all get along great! Of course none of them are aggressive. The temperments are more important that the breeds/sizes.

It is not the "breeds" that you need be concerned about. It is who will be the dominant one...and that needs to be YOU! Whatever you say goes! Teach each to respect you and they will transfer that respect to each other.
At present I have a happy-go-lucky labrador and a very-serious karakachan. Their personalities are so very different; yet they are quite respectful of each other because, if they're not, they each answer to me!
