That looks like a chain drive gear box I have on one of my old tillers. The seals, if you can call them that, are shot and leak all the oil out when it runs. I put a hole in it at the top to squirt some 80/90 gear oil in before I till. (Put a self tapping screw back in the hole to keep the dirt out.)
Does your 1" shaft collar make a good enough seal to keep the oil from leaking out? If so, I may have to try that...

Thanks, Keith Not to speak for fixitguy, but the grease should prevent the oil from splashing out. You would have to grease it before every use. No gearbox should be filled over half full with lube. Usually the factory filler hole is positioned so its not even possible to fill it more than this. Not as cheap but only way I see that might possibly be better would be to weld a flat steel plate (with hole in center for shaft of course)to housing, then bolt a generic flange bearing to the plate. The bearing being sized appropriately for the shaft. Not sure it would be any real improvement as anybody with any sense runs this kind rototiller at lower engine rpm anyways,` so as to be controllable. So high speed bearing not really needed. Faster speed and it just skitters around and takes big muscles guy to hold it back.

The grease should hold the oil in fairly decent. The locking collar is a fairly tight fit. You could add some STP "motor honey" to the gear box also, might add some stick to the chain case. I've done this same repair to 20 old tillers in the last 8 years. All my customers are grateful to have the old machine back in service, at a fair price.

Might want to use the heaviest thickest grease you can find. Lot of the modern grease is relatively thin and turns liquid in hot environment. Thickest I have seen in recent years is "disc brake wheel bearing grease". I think the idea being disc brakes absorb more heat than drum brakes... Unfortunately seems to usually come in a can rather than tube for grease gun. So you would have to manually spoon it either into an empty tube or directly into the grease gun if your gun allows this. Long ago there was this really nasty old black colored "axle grease". Havent seen that in long time. It may have been a hold over from horse drawn equipment days.
