I made my first ever batch of pickles a few days ago. I don't care much for pickles, so I never bothered with them before. But, hubby and DD (4yo) both LOVE them and I have been trying to grow some pickling cukes for a couple of years, without success. This year our garden is fabulous! And, even though I got the cukes planted really late, I finally got enough at one time for a small batch. I did sliced dill pickles so that we would have them for sandwiches and/or hamburgers, and wound up with five pint jars of them.
DH and DD both proclaimed them to be PERFECT! Yay!. So, I will definitely make a lot more of them as long as the cukes hold out and the frost holds off.

Bearscreek, I made my first pickles this year too, but I used zucchini instead of cukes because I didn't get many of them. They were proclaimed a success by all :-)
