Were going from 90's to 70's this week, so I got a pot of soup on...... Strong winds tomorrow, central wa. The west side is expecting winds also. We brought in our tomatoes, green peppers and zucchini....tonight was fried zucchini fpr dinner. IF we get rain I didn't want the veggies to get wreck.

What a coincidence, countryjo, I'm making cheesy cauliflower soup today, too...definitely feels like soup weather. It is very gusty here today...my tree with the vertical split is opening and shutting again, swaying in the wind. With a tree on either side holding it up, it doesn't have anyplace to go. I'm disappointed in the amount of rain we've had so far. I was expecting more steady rain today, but the sun is making off and on appearances through the clouds, and there's only an occasional shower. Certainly not much to help wet things down thoroughly.

Well, I HAD planned on making soup today, before the gusty winds knocked out the power here all day. I suppose I could have fired up the generator, or used the camp stove, but rather than waste fuel, I just changed my plans to fit the circumstances. It blew hard and we had the occasional brief shower, but not nearly enough rain to make my little heart happy. However, I'm thankful for every single drop. I guess I can make soup for tomorrow night's dinner.

It was potato soup and crusty bread over here. It went well with all this rain and wind. We lost power this morning, but only for a few minutes. I picked tomatoes in the rain, groan. Tomorrow I'm making tomato soup and grilled cheese. Total comfort food.

There is not a meal besides tomato soup and grilled cheese that speaks of comfort....unless it is potato soup and Irish soda bread. It was always called "peasant's food" for a reason. It comforts the body and soul :-)

It's not soup weather here this week, but last week it sure was. I made up a big batch of chicken broth (dh just happened to have a cold at that time, too) and added some sauteed veggies and cooked noodles to some of it. It seemed strange having soup in summer, but two of the days the high temps did not get out of the 50's.
This week's the opposite, but the weather roller coaster continues and next week will be soup weather again. I think I'll try one of the cream of tomato soup recipes that were posted a few weeks back.

Smoked salmon chowder last night. The salmon are headed up, not many, none at the fish hatchery yet. Lots in Tillamook Bay. I saw a nice Steelhead below the falls yesterday. Another month before the fall salmon run gets here IF we get rains so there is enough water for them to make the run. The Rickreall has dry places....James

Oh my gosh- smoked salmon chowder?! You guys have seriously got to stop with all this soup & bread talk! It's hard to keep eating salad and summer squash from the garden when I've got visions of hot soup & bread dancing around my head.
And- how do I make that smoked salmon chowder, James? Pretty sure I have everything for it on hand.

Yeah, James, that chowder sounds wonderful! I am really hoping the salmon runs hold off this fall - the rivers are just so low and way too warm, too. You can walk across the Cowlitz in many spots. Good fishing at the Astoria-Megler bridge, though. I have school friends posting beautiful fish pics on fb.

Smoked salmon chowder
3 tablespoons butter 2 stalks celery, cut into 1/2-inch slices 1 bunch green onions, cut into 1/2 inch slices, tops and all Corn, kernels from 2 ears, grilled 2 TBS. flour 1/2 lb. unpeeled small red potatoes, cut into 1/2" cubes Salt and pepper 4 cups fish or chicken stock 1 cup whole milk 1 pound smoked salmon flaked 1/4 cup minced fresh dill
PREPARATION Heat butter in large pot over medium heat, sauté the celery, green onion and corn. Stir occasionally. Sprinkle in flour and stir. Add 2 cups stock and the potatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer lightly until the potatoes are almost tender, about 15 minutes, add stock if needed.
Stir in the milk, add the salmon, cook on low, uncovered until the potatoes are tender, 7 to 10 minutes. Add stock as needed. Salt to taste.
Serve, topped with dill.

Mmm, that sounds wonderful!
Today is cheesy cauliflower soup - thinking about adding some cornbread to crumble into it.
