Yesterday afternoon I pulled the cover off a spare (empty) bee hive and there were 2 Garter snakes on top of the frames. I guess I'm not in warm weather mode yet because I wasn't expecting snakes at all yet. I'll bet my reaction boosted their ego a little bit.

Coming down the driveway I was surprised to see a snake already slithering across...just a couple of weeks ago we still had snow and ice. Realized it was a copperhead just as I drove over it. Backed up to make sure I was right. It WAS.

Eek, I am so thankful we don't have poisonous snakes here. It would freak me out. I do love our garter snakes that we have. They camp out in my field and help me take care of our market garden. It is fun to see them grow in size through the summer. I admit they sometimes do startle me when I am picking beans and neither one of us realized the other was there. lol They are so pretty. I wouldn't feel that way about poisonous snakes though. I tip my hat to those of you who garden in areas with them. Yikes. I suppose you get used to checking for them but I would be a basket case.

I'm with chickadee. Glad we do not have poisonous snakes here, especially now that we have a pre-schooler running around the farm.

I haven't seen any snakes yet, but it's pretty early in the season. We have a number of different kinds here, but as far as I know, no venomous ones. I kind of like snakes. My husband kind of, well, hates them.

Saw my first snake a couple of days ago when I was walking across the dam. We scared each other half to death. Didn't get a good look at it as it slid into the pond, but haven't seen it since. I now walk very slowly and carefully across the dam ...

Saw our first snake of the season- and the first on this property. I knew that they'd be a part of my new life in the country, and I was prepared to watch where I stepped, and stiffle any yelps. No one told me I'd have to be prepared to find the darn snake hanging around the door knob though!! (yeah. knob. that thing you reach out and wrap your hand around without thinking 2ce!) To add insult to injury, the dude is one of 3 types that are commonly confused for one another, so I and my beginners guide to snakes wern't up to the task of figuring out who'd come a visitin.

We saw a smallish black snake about 2 weeks ago - too early. He was pretty sluggish, but when it warmed up this week I saw him again moving a little quicker.

I only see a garter snake occasionally. Sure don't miss living at the edge of the Great Dismal Swamp in NC where there were plenty of rattle snakes, cooperheads & water moccasins ... miss the black snakes though.

As children we ran barefoot through the woods, fields and swamps, never got snake bite. Now I can walk to the garden and see 3 or 4. God truly does look after fools and children.

Thankful I live in garter snake country...I don't know if I'd survive in venomous snake country. I don't think before I reach for something outside, and it doesn't seem that's a good idea in some places, lol.

I was spoiled living 18 years in the Pacific NW,, both NW WA and then NW OR... most I would see was a Garter snake. They never bothered anyone.
Here... Cooperheads, lots and lots of copperheads. Have 3 turkeys to keep them away from the house and the most close pastures, but if you venture out... you have to be on the look out. Neighbors are always having problems with them and they are very aggressive.
Have water moccasins out back where there is a pond on the neighbors place and way back part of our property, is a swamp. Also have rattlesnakes.. but I haven't seen one...yet. At least with Rattlesnakes, you normally know they are there.
Haven't seen a single Non Poisonous snake.. been here 3 years and 5 months. Wish DH could find a good fair wage job back in NW Oregon... so want to move back there.

Our snakes are reported out...though I haven't encountered one. Our only venomous ones are rattlesnakes: western-diamondbacks and prairie rattlers. We don't have a lot of them...but they 'could' be anywhere. We just know to be aware...and go on with our business. Very young, children are taught sensible precautions, eg, don't reach where you can't see...watch where you are stepping in tall grass. Fortunately, rattlesnakes usually sound an alarm. They come with the territory here...and are valuable rodent-control. They just need to do their rat-killin' AWAY from me and mine !!!

In the hills above the Columbia River,,, half way between St Helens and Rainier... with a Rainier Address. I seriously loved it there, and we were hoping to retire on the small farm we had.
To be honest,, it will always be Home to me. And I hope, some day to go back.

I grew up in northern Ohio, but spent summers in WV, and didn't think I'd ever want to live where there were poisonous snakes. Having lived in NC for 10 years now, I've found that you really do get used to it.
Walking in the woods, garden, etc. you develop a different way of moving. Without thinking about it, you never (well, almost never) put your hands or feet where you can't see. For example, growing up, I would just step over a downed tree in the woods. Now, I step up onto it, look down, then step off to the other side. It comes without thinking, eventually.
Too, I've brought home several black snakes that friends/co-workers have complained about. The black snakes around here get pretty big and are your best insurance against copperheads. They will control the rodents to the point that copperheads can't survive there. They say that every black snake on your property is 5 copperheads that WON'T be.

GMi, I don't want to live where there are poisonous snakes either! Or ticks... holy bananas, the ticks are bad here! Hence the chickens and turkeys. Sadly, we had to come across country for a fair wage full time job.
Will do MGM. Used to go to Longview a lot, went to a couple of the feed stores there, Fred Myers and so on.

Just realized our locations aren't on the board, so Y'all might put in posts where you are.... more important on the gardening forum, I suppose. I"m in NE Colorado. We had our first report of rattlesnakes in Fort Collins - I'm sure they're waking up around here too. Hate snakes! I get told that they're more afraid of me, than I am of them..... I would vigorously beg to differ!!

moldy, Melissa or Wendy (I forget which) suggested that we put our locations in the signature block in our profiles.
