Has the horse market shown any recovery in your area this summer? It doesn't seem to be improving here at all. Tack and trailers are dropping in value as well, if you want to sell them.
Has anyone sold a horse or re homed one? Aoconnor do you sell any of the horses you save? Is there a market in your area?

Hi mollymckee. I do not sell the horses I bring in. I have given 2 away, both to my old farrier that has done wonderfully with them, but in general once they are here they stay.
The horse market in my area is good, at least it would appear by the prices I have seen that horses are selling for a lot more than a ew years ago. But...I am in a very good area, a lot of the big trainers are here, like Clinton Anderson, Chris Cox, etc. There are some of the most famous ropers, cutters, reiners, and barrel runners here as well. The market here is strong if you have a good head or heel horse to sell, or a cutting horse that is a winner, a solid Reiner, etc.
Trailers are a fairly well priced here also. I could sell my 2000 CM 3 horse slant bumper pull that is for tall horses and has good tires and floor, for around 3500 to 4000. That is close to what one would cost new. On the flip side of the used market, custom builds here are not terribly high. I just bought my custom built Keifer, 4 horse slant gooseneck, 5 ft firewall, 8 ft wide and 7.6 ft tall, drop downs on both sides, roof vents, rear removable tack, huge front sleeping berth and tack, stud stall, mats, etc. for less than 30,000. It was an unbelievable price for that trailer. So used keep their value and customs are less than you might pay other places. Strange:-)
There is no market here for older horses. That is one downfall to the area. A horse that is 12 around here is probably used up. It may be sound, or may not be. It may have to have hock injections twice a year or whatever. I can't tell you how many horses run through the sale barns around here that are used up from being ridden hard and often. A lot of the big horse people here actually aren't bad on their horses, it's the wanna be cowboys and girls that really beat the heck out of their mounts and then move on to the next. Sad...

mollymckee, I was looking at two mares last night at the auction. Both had great papers, one was pregnant, both were in fair shape. The pregnant mare was 5 years old, she sold for 4000 at auction. The other mare was not pregnant, was 12 years old, and solidly built but needed about 150 pounds to look better. She sold for 500 bucks. One can never tell what the market will do! Generally, the broke, not pregnant mares sell better than young pregnant mares, but this just goes to show that the market is volatile. I felt bad for the older mare, she had fantastic lines and was saddle broke. Hope the people who picked her up won't just breed the heck fire out of her and then toss her to the side. Geldings that were ranch broke sold the best out of the whole night though. They consistently brought high dollar amounts, for pretty much any of them regardless of age.
