Our old Shepherd can't make it up and down the back steps into the fenced yard any more, so all summer I've been letting him in and out the front door, which has shallow steps. He knows his boundaries pretty well, so wanders around the front yard and barnyard to do his business and make sure everything is in order on the farm. This has worked well all summer. However, now it's completely dark when he goes out at 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. and I worry he might forget where he's at and wander too close to the road (I'm disabled so can't accompany him). I was at a home improvement store one day and happened to see some small clip-on lights. You squeeze them once to get a bright steady light, twice to get a flashing light. Probably meant to clip on to a belt loop but I immediately thought of my old dog. Bought one and snapped it on my dog's collar. Now when he goes out I just give the little disk a squeeze and he is very visible. I also like the fact that I can step out on my porch and instantly see where he's at. The flash feature is pretty cool, it is highly visible, however the dog doesn't like it so I usually just turn on the steady light. I think I will go back and buy an extra one or two. Just thought someone else might be able to use something like this (cats, kids, joggers?) I bought mine at Lowe's and it was about $8. I think it was called Night Ize or something like that. I'm sure there are other brands at other stores or online.

Great idea. My old border collie is having the same problem. He’ll decide to wander and can’t find his way home. Or, maybe he finds something more interesting. If he had a little light I’d know where he was.

This place I bought in GA had a pole light that was installed by the electric company. Not a sodium light, but it emits a nice soft glow. I had it hooked up for my old, near blind dog and he gets around just fine with it. He, too, likes to walk the perimeter checking on the 'stead.
If I had known about your light, I might not have to pay $15.00 a month so my dog can wander where he likes without bumping into anything. Think I have to visit Lowe's.

That is a very good idea. I have an old German Shepard girl that gets confused if she wanders out the side gate. I have to get my headlamp on and try to find her, usually she is down the hill and can't figure out how to get back up. Gotta go to Lowes!

Great idea! We have a temporary fence up at our new place and now that it's dark when they go out in the am I can't see if something knocked it down overnight. Would keep me from worrying...

That's a great find. Terrific idea! I'll bet it would also be a comfort to an older dog who is having vision issues.
I'll have to remember that when the time comes.
