My cat Hisser is marking, mostly on cardboard storage cartons. This is relatively new. It may have gotten better, then worse, not quite sure. I never see him at it, and I don't come up on wet spots. Hisser was Dad's cat. Hisser is a neutered male, now perhaps 6 or 7 years old, at that time, in&out. When Dad passed away, I took Hisser to my house for about a year, where he needed to be an inside cat. I came back to live in Dad's house, brought Hisser with me, and am keeping him inside. We've been here a LONG time, though. Going on 2 years. I have another cat, Porky. They get along but they don't hang out together. (They both hung out with my OTHER cat, who now lives with the ex.) Yes, a soap opera with cats... There are 4 litter boxes in two different rooms. I keep them clean. I may add a box in the cellar since both cats look around down there sometimes. I plan a visit to the vet soon for a check-up. Other ideas? Thanks.

If he’s marking it’s probably not really a housebreaking issue but a territorial one. Anything he’s marked on, get rid of. Put him outside. Doesn’t have to be all day, but definitely during his active times. He’ll mark the trees.

It could also be diabetes. That was one of the first symptoms that my old male cat, Rocky had. He was 7 when he was diagnosed. Might be worth a trip to the vet if it continues, especially if his behavior changes.
Good luck!

Could also be a urinary tract infection. A cat can go from perfectly housebroken to peeing in odd spots from this. Worth getting checked out.

We have a neutered 15-year-old male who has marked the outside doors from the inside all his life. He smells the outside males markings and responds. This happens in the AM. (I wonder sometimes if he is just too lazy to go upstairs to the litter boxes.).
Our cure is white vinegar or vinegar and hydrogen peroxide mixed half-and half. We spray the doors every night. Spry everything he has marked repeatably.

For whatever reasons, there seems to be less marking. I have been away couple days, my sister stops in to feed and pet, so I haven't checked all around. The house didn't smell of pee when I walked in. I've been using white vinegar, and also a bottled something from the pet store.

Scoe 10X is a good product to help with this problem. (No, that is not a paid endorsement, LOL.)
