A Chinese district government is giving dog owners a stark choice: Get rid of your pets or we'll come to your home and kill them on the spot.
The order cites only the maintenance of environmental hygiene and "everyone's normal lives" as reasons.
"No person is permitted to keep a dog of any kind," said the notice. The order covers dogs that have been registered and vaccinated.

Wish I had a dollar for every time I read about something occuring in one city, or one school district, or one state, or one country and said "That will never happen here" but it did

There was a Chinese movie that had something similar as a plot line- On the Beat from 1995. But then some in China eat dog.

You also have to consider the overcrowding in China - especially the cities, as your article states "environmental hygiene" and also it's a Chinese district - not all of China's countryside.
Tempest in a teapot?

Presently, 54 per cent of the world’s population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 66 per cent by 2050
Today's world is having a very hard time containing all the tempests in teapots.

Anyone that comes into MY home and try to take MY dogs had best be prepared to be carried out on a stretcher. I would fight for them the same as another would fight for their child.

God forbid anyone trying to take Oggies dog, I understand that they serve 'cat' in Chinese restaurants . . . (tastes like chicken with purrrr) It's doubtful that Oggie would have a problem with that.

You might recall that my daughter is studying in China right now. She told me that the reasoning behind the no dog rule is that it has something to do with perceiving wealth. That to have a dog, feed, vaccinate etc shows that you are wealthy. So by that logic, people with dogs are wealthier than non dog owners...and basically it is to keep everyone on the same playing field. Anyway, that is one idea/theory behind it.
I have 6 very large dogs. Another reason I love where I live.

I learned a long time ago to never say it couldn't happen here. It can. When the government wants total control over people, they can do anything they want, with very little backlash.
Socialism and/or communism are not good things.

Not only the govt, but groups like HSUS and PETA. Both groups have the avowed goal of the elimination of pet animals. They also see humans as "parasites" on the face of the planet.
Those people have serious issues, and they have made it darned near impossible to be a responsible dog breeder in MO, by bringing in people from out of state to lobby against breeding any animals.
If anyone tries to take my dogs, they will find out why I keep them - and it will hurt them.
