Big job done. S-I-L and both Grandkids came and helped, made it go a lot faster. Everyone cut apples and pears all morning. Pressed the pears first so DD could start canning. Then did grapes, apples last. DD ran the canning, S-I-L and Grandkids ran the scatter, DS ran the press all day. DGD was a trooper. The apples were very good, very little worm damage, mostly quartered to check. Pears were excellent, most just cut in half. 44 qts of pear juice and 112 qts of grape, half with grapes. Filled the 50 gal barrel and 18 gallons of cider in glass jugs. I think we drank 2 gallons, lol. Had all 4 canners going, canned all the pear and all but 4 gallons of the grape juice, just removed the last off the wood stove. We were a good team. We had beef and smoked salmon tacos and slaw for lunch about 1:00, then started on the cider. Great day and lots of fun. Hay ride on the full moon, Apple cider donuts, hot apple cider, chili and corn bread. Next job, picking up nuts and picking the apples to store in the fruit house. Oct 12th is coming up quickly....James

Ugh. Yes, you definitely need to get it all done soon. And, I need a fruit house. I just love reading about all that you and your wife do.

What a terrific day! When you're foot's propped up on the 13th and you're sipping some hot spiced apple juice, it's going to taste very sweet, indeed.

Us 4 guys went salmon fishing today, got to Newport at sunrise. GS was sleeping, so we went out and set the crab traps. I had my limit at 0800, so back to the dock to let GS have a chance at fishing. He is 13 and has a short attention span but he was interested. DS had his limit an hour later, he is usually the Captain but we traded off. S-I-L's first salmon trip, he is having a blast. They came back in 10 minutes ago all have limits, just having fun now. Will collect the crab traps, get lunch and head home about 2:00. Kind of cool but sunny, some wind in exposed areas but up river not bad at all. I've got the fish cleaned, filleted and on ice. Nice elk herd just up from the bay, lots of fish making their way into the bay, need some good rain to help them upstream to spawn....James Looking out from the dock. www.newportoregon.com/photo/bridge-newport06.jpg

Ahh, beautiful pic, James! Makes me homesick for my growing up years. We lived on a river, and much of the social life centered around it. I had my first boat long before I ever had my first car. I'm the only person I know who will become overwhelmed with nostalgia at the smell of dead fish.

Got home around 3:00. While watching the end of the RACE we sliced off the fillets, dunked in apple cider, brown sugar mixture. Last night I made a bunch of alder shavings, threw them in a 5 gallon bucket of water. Built a small fire, added a bunch of the chips. Will add a small handful every 15 minutes. Smells good already....James
