I need to give Spooky the cat some thinned broth and baby food via syringe, to get some calories into him. KFD. He's getting antacid and nausea meds. The whole deal is to get him eating better again on his own. Any advice on how much at once, how often, and how to keep him aspirating any fluid or solids? The vet said to do this via a receptionist, but I didn't get quite the detail I want. Nervous. So far it seems to be going OK. He doesn't resist. He spit a little back, but I think maybe too much at once. I'm being careful. The stuff is all staying down. Thanks.

I would just do very small amounts at a time, and try to get at least 5-6 cc's down each feeding. Don't put the syringe tip so far back in his mouth that it makes him unable to move the food down his throat with his tongue, it could easily go down the wrong tube if you put it too far back. I usually put the syringe tip in the side of the mouth, then let the cat kind of lick, swallow, it from there.
Best of luck. Poor kitty...

Agree. Side of mouth is good. Dabbing on muzzle works if you can’t get the syringe in.
Hope kitty gets better.

I think we're doing OK. Filling the syringe with 8 mls. Yesterday 5 doses, some with baby food, some with "cat milk" product. Some dribbles if I push too fast. I thin the things I have quite a bit, but extra fluid is not a problem per se with cfd. Spooky goes to the water bucket, but cats don't all drink as much as maybe they should, anyway. He is not eating voluntarily that I am aware of. Maura, he's not really going to get better. He may pull around again with this extra care. He does not act like he is suffering.

Yes, Redfish. Diagnosed almost four years ago, so likely reduced kidney function before that. I give sub-Q at amount vet said about twice a week. More if Spooky will tolerate. One full syringe goes down pretty well at a time. At least some calories. Trying to do more per sitting since all the handling is a stress (to both.)
