We've been waiting a long time. In a real change, we're going to be getting a Pembroke Corgi. I know, I know -- I've always had big dogs, and I still want to get a Tibetan mastiff for a stay-at-home dog, but we can't do that until we get the place fenced, and I am tired of waiting. So for a doggie we can take on road trips with us, we're getting a Corgi pup. We're getting one who comes from genetically-tested parents to eliminate the chance of getting a degenerative disease (which for short, I call "Lou Gehrig's for Corgis"). And then there is a blood disease (hemophilia for Corgis) and an eye disease (macular degeneration for Corgis) which are also genetically ruled out. And the other reason we're buying from a breeder is so we can have a Pembroke Corgi with a tail. It's been a long wait, but I think we're looking at a Christmas trip to fetch the little guy. His name will be Kebabullah ("God's Kebab" , but we'll probably call him Kebab, for short. A puppy. Never had a puppy before.

Congrats on your upcoming addition to the family.
I am fighting the urge to get another dog right now. The dog we have is a mutt, but he is a good pet and working on being a good dog. But, as a kid, my brother and I always had beagles, and I've always had a soft spot in my heart for those little guys. Lately, two different customers where I work have been coming in with beagle pups, and it has been gnawing away at me. I really want a beagle, but with raising rabbits (60+) I'm not sure how that would go over.

Congrats Snoozy!! So exciting! Those are all very good reasons to buy from a breeder. While I rescue pretty regularly, I've yet to have a supposedly "healthier" mutt not have some genetic condition and when the hurt of it got to be too much I got my Sunni from a breeder and health-tested parents and never regretted it. It's very, very nice to know things like how big the dog will get and what the basic temperament will be like. As a bonus, the benefits of a puppy who's breeder meant to be a breeder as opposed to the kind who see their dog getting fat and think "Oh, crap..." is she came to me 90% housebroken, using a dog door, trained to sit, trained to not jump up, exposed to a leash and having seen all the usual household things like steps and different kinds of flooring and tvs and phones and vacuums. It was really great, and I send them pictures sometimes, which they are always thrilled to get. May your experience be as good as mine! Just out of curiosity, as you want a tail, why a Pembroke instead of a Cardigan? @dba I had a beagle, Scooter. He was an impossible dog in many ways, but he learned quickly and well that rabbits in cages or in the house are not really rabbits. Real rabbits are on the ground and are his. (And wow, could that dog hunt!!) Way-too-smelly creatures live in cages and are mine. And like everything else that's mine, it is to be protected, and not molested. This is actually ridiculously easy to teach hunting dogs. A dog is no good for hunting if it goes after the wrong kind of game, and domestic rabbits have a much stronger and somewhat different smell than wild ones, so it's no different than teaching them to leave any other kind of off game alone, and easier because you can always be 100% certain that they're after the wrong thing. So long as the pup doesn't come to you with bad training - I know some folks "expose" beagle puppies to rabbits by encouraging them to go ballistic over a bunny in a cage - it should be very easy. Go get your beagle!

I like the Pembroke face and ears better. Great smile! Also the Cardigan feet are splay-footed, like Bassett hounds, and I like the normal forward-pointing feet of the Pembroke.

No problem here with your getting a purebred dog from a reputable breeder. If we don’t support them, what’s left?

The breeder has been sending us pics every so often, and he has gone from looking like a drowned hamster to a guinea pig to a generic Pokey Puppy, and now he is starting to look like a Corgi. With a tail, as he should be. Here is little Kebabullah, with his dad, which is probably what he will look like when he is all growed up...

OMG what a beautiful/cuddly looking puppy. Congratulations! You were smart to go with a reputable breeder. Genetic issues sure can put a damper on raising any dog you've grown to love.

The breeder says his siblings think his tail is a fine toy! It must be irresistible for them.

They don’t cut the tails off, they are born bobbed or tailed.
Too cute. How can you wait?

Actually, you are wrong there. While some are born naturally bobtailed, the majority are not. The majority have their little spines whacked off at three days old. Same as Rottweilers and Dobermans and weimaraners and Australian shepherds.
We're going away just after thanksgiving for a month, so we'll go fetch him after Christmas.

Ahhhh he's adorable. Just yummy!
I often think Porter needs a sibling but at his age I'm afraid to introduce another while I'm working.

He is absolutely adorable! You will find that they are one of the smartest breeds around. I worked for a Corgi breeder years ago and fell in love with them.
Kudos on keeping the tail. I hate to see the little guys lose one of their most expressive parts!
Good Luck with him and send lots of pictures!
PS. I know you said you've never had a puppy before. It's just like raising kids, structure and consistency are of utmost importance!

His name is Kebabullah, which is Urdu and Arabic for Allah's Kebab. We call him Kebab for short. But he knows his full name, too. He comes pretty well to it, especially when I sing it out with a consistent melody. I always thought that more than 2 syllables in a dog name would be confusing or just wasted, but now I think it gives his little brain and big ears more time to realize he is being called.

Congrats, he's gorgeous! Not only do I love puppy breath, but does anyone else think their little feet smell like popcorn? My hubby thought I was crazy until he smelled it too!
Good luck with him. Everyone needs a canine best buddy!
