The liver plays a big role in blood sugar regulation. Most type 2 diabetics have at least some liver damage. Anyway milk thistle is supposed to be good for the liver. I had been taking the extract in capsules.
I bought the bulk seed this time, rather than the powder in capsules. Its supposed to be good for your liver. Tried making a tea with it this morning. Quarter cup thistle seed ground in coffee grinder and put in pot hot water (about 3C water), let steep 20 minutes. Strain. Ok at this point it surprisingly tasted sort of broth like. I added half teaspoon butter, bit sea salt, and ground pepper. Better. Bit of garlic powder and pretty good. I imagine one could spice it up even better with experimentation. Maybe bit ginger or powdered hot chilies.
This is nice cause I cant eat tomatoes or tomato juice. They spike my blood sugar.
Unless you raised your own milk thistle seed, probably not economic to use it for soup, but it is a nice hot savory drink.
Some years back I had raised some milk thistles cause I had read you could eat the leaves, maybe roots. Wow, they looked too prickly to do anything with, even when young, so I didnt try. Though they tolerate hot and dry summer very well. Maybe try them again just for the seed. I might get brave enough to try putting some of leaves in pressure cooker. Milk thistle leaves makes that old tough woody kale they sell at Walmart look like the tenderest baby spinach.
