I received a warning from the Weather Channel yesterday while I was working outside that fast-moving storms could produce "graupel." That sounded a little ominous, so I hurried back inside to figure out if I needed to ready any emergency preparations. I had never hear that term before. "Graupel- Small pellets of ice created when supercooled water droplets coat, or rime, a snowflake. The pellets are cloudy or white, not clear." You can learn something new every day if you're not careful. Kathy

Yes. Me, too! But, if you say, "Hail is coming," people won't worry so much and subscribe to your alerts. Kathy

Actually, Graupel is much softer than hail or sleet. It is more like a slightly compressed snow pellet and makes for lousy skiing. It is akin to the type of snow that is produced by snow blowers at ski areas. It offers no resistance when you try to schuss through it.
It is actually a fairly common German word, especially around those "false", man-made mountain ski areas in the some cities in Germany. Like the one in Berlin.
ETA: So @illini, you are not so much increasing your vocabulary as you are learning to speak German!!! Viel Gluck!!!
