I dug up my horseradish today to transplant it. The root was very soggy, I'm guessing it's from all the snow but figured I'd ask just in case.

Mine are just starting to show some green. That's my signal to think about digging them very soon. Need to do that in a week or so for some so that I can move them. Definitely don't expect to find any soggy roots.

Thanks! It was planted there last spring. Will this get better or is this root toast? What can I do for it? TYIA

No idea what might happen. Nobody else will, either, until you plant it back. I just dug some of mine and all nice and firm. That included one big one that I missed and the Mantis chewed it into 100 pieces which will now become 100 plants to hoe off all summer!

I planted it yesterday in another spot so we will see.

DW just bought some root stock from a seed company. Burpee maybe? It did not come with instructions. How do I get it to take root? Would potting it or growing it in a 5-gallon bucket be a bad idea?

Growing in a 5 gallon bucket is a fine idea. Depending on your winters, you will want to bring it inside over winters.
It doesn't have to be planted deep.... or if it is, it will eventually find its way to the surface.

Most would just poke it into the soil straight down as it was growing. Best results come from putting it in at about a 45ยบ angle. Then it will form roots along the underside that have a chance to go down fast. The pieces may even come having been cut at a slant. That's your guide as to the angle to plant them with the top end just under the soil.
When I was sent into forced retirement by HT a year ago, I had a horseradish offer going on. Ended up with one lot left over and planted them in a #7 nursery pot and pretty much ignored them. They survived despite my neglect and appear to be doing well. That's 5 plants in just under 7 gallons and no doubt a bit crowded. Three would have been better. If 5 gallons, maybe 2 would work.
When growing and harvesting horseradish as an annual, you don't have to buy new stock each year. Save the crowns and leave about an inch of root on it. That's your planting stock. They may also be cut down the center to double the number that you harvested.

MARTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! joy No kidding! DW & I have been the beneficiary of his generosity & wisdom. Some of our best tomatoes last year were from his seed stock. I was very sad the day he was 'erased', and excited when he appeared here.

Martin DH did that to mine a few years ago, and I had horseradish sprouting up all over the garden. That was about the same time I read that horseradish interplanted with potatoes will help ward off potato beetles, so I dug up a bunch of the sprouts and stuck them in my potato rows. Didn't have potato beetles that year, so now every spring I purposely chop up a section of the horseradish with the tiller so I can have easily plantable pieces to stick in my potato patch.

I think I'll try the 5 gallon bucket idea I have a lot of those. I looked at the root the other day and I don't think it survived the transplant. Really odd that I dug up one soggy root.

Great post! I've got some on the way, I think. Ordered them off that 'other site'. Hmmm. Now that I think about it, I wonder if they tried to contact me and couldn't! That would be a bummer.
As far as I know they'll survive winters in zone 6. I planted some 'out there' last year. But I forgot where I put it! Hah! I don't want it near my veg garden tho. I've heard some things about that wonderful but difficult-to-control root.

I should be there between 10-11 ... doing some visiting with vendors I haven't seen since last Oct, seeing what new things they have, making some purchases, getting in on the morning silent auction. Afternoons I'm usually in the 'common area' with my spinning wheel.
When you walk into the festival, there will be a couple vendors in the entrance hall and the majority of the vendors in the gym to the left. If you go past the vendors in the entrance hall and take a right, you will see the silent auction tables. Follow those & you'll go into the 'common area'.

I just wanted to update this thread to tell you all especially Muller's Lane Farm that since I transplanted the root it has new growth! I have been watering it and keeping and eye on it, I really thought that one was a goner.
