Ran outside to cover my riding lawnmower because it was raining & thundering pretty hard. Next thing I knew there was a large crrraaack like lightning had struck pretty close. Scared me so... I cowered next to the house wall with my arms over my head. Smelled something, but didn't pay any attention as I ran into the house... Later, I looked outside and one of the ancient elms had split down the middle with the huge center branch half on the ground not more than 100 feet from where I was standing.
And how's your day?

51 people die from lightning strikes in the U.S. every year.
If you've ever been close to a strike (I have, so I sympathize with the thread starter), it is something you will never, ever forget. I was close enough that the light blinded me for several seconds and I couldn't hear diddly for ten minutes or more. It was a scary event.
There is no getting out of the way...It. Just. Happens.

Oh wow! So glad you are safe!
Be sure to check all your freezers (if you have any). We lost 3 of ours a few years back when there was a close lightening strike.

Glad you are Ok. I don't think I can ever be struck by lighting, the odds are in my favor. I'm the oldest grandchild on my Mother's side. Her Father, my Grandfather was struck and killed by lighting while standing inside the house in front of the door screen. This was in southern Alabama, he died instantly. So I think the odds of his first grandchild being struck are slim to none.

You are right about the odds but I wouldn't stand out in a storm with that pitchfork, just in case.

We have had some close ones. Lightning struck very close to our house and the whole living room lit up with a bright orange light and the hair raised on our arms. Very weird sensation.

When I drove a big rig I got hit by lighting. Turned my truck off in the hammer lane. Those things are very hard to steer with no power steering. Thank God I made it to the shoulder. Didn't hurt me at all. Hands on a plastic steering wheel, feet on a rubber mat sitting in a leather seat. Dispatcher said I was lying. Still have the burnt antenna as proof. Took a week to fix.

One of our horses died from being struck by lightning. She was standing next to the metal gate, big crack of lightning at night...we found her the next morning, lying on her side a few feet from the gate.

IF , you have any large tree's close to the eave(s) of your home you might want to consider having them 'Grounded' as a strike can jump from the tree over to your home . ...........Whomever does the work will wrap each large branch with #6 solid copper every few feet and then connect all of them together and run the connecting wire to a ground rod close to the tree . Awfully good ins. to protect your home . , fordy

My Mother was the oldest at 15 of 7 kids at the time and my Grandmother had a newborn, He was holding my mothers two year old sister at the time of the strike. She was thrown across the room and they had to rub her down with witch hazel and massage her till she came too. She has problems today from it. My mother married my father shortly after and they adopted her, she is 8 years older than me. I'm named after my Grandfather, so my odds are even stronger.

Years ago we were driving through the white mountains in a thunderstorm. We watched balls of fire moving sideways between clouds ahead of us. I was terrified. DH kept saying, "Wow that was beautiful!" I kept thinking, "We're going to die."

Amazing, you could not make up a movie script like that. For one of the very few times in my life, I'm speechless.

Don't know why I'm so late finding this thread. Too busy I guess.I just wanted to add,in the 70's dad had 30 cows. A big thunderstorm hit and the cows were under a walnut tree. The lightning hit the tree and killed 16 head. That is what caused him to get out of cattle. The ins. only paid $1000 max. Also about every year lightning would hit one of our tobacco patches a kill off big spots, many 50' in diameter. It seems to always cost us money.

I had a tree removal guy out yesterday to see what needed to see if it could be saved or needed to be taken down. Well, it's a gonner. He said the lightning had traveled inside the tree down to the ground. You can see large vertical splits in the bark. The good thing is that with the tree gone, I will now have a sunny spot for a garden as he'll remove the whole thing. He will even cut the 4 trunks into lengths to fit my fireplace (wonder if I can rent/use a log splitter). Yes Hank, I think someone was listening to my quandary over a gardening space as I have nothing to confess.

That reminds me of this video. I am so awful - I have probably watched it 20 times. The fun starts around 25 seconds in and make sure you watch it to the very end. www.youtube.com/watch?v=X14e9Fwxa8w
