DH and I are so excited. We will be getting a 10-month-old golden/yellow lab mix on Monday. He is quite the energetic guy. Our last dog passed away almost two years ago and we are ready for another one. This one will, of course, need a lot of work. He needs obedience classes. We are willing to do this. We will be busy most of the weekend puppy proofing the house. We got to meet him today and he is so much fun. When we get our house built, as we still live in our house in town, he will have a lot of land to play on. We have a little over 17 acres. He really enjoys the outside and this will be quite the treat for him.

Congrats on the new pup! How exciting!
Love dogs, I don't think I could ever be without one.
Working with a pup is so fun, I love the bond you develop when you start working with them. Simply amazing!

Congrats on the new pup! I could never be without one, but right now we are down to one and he really isn't up to adding another dog at his age, so I guess at some point I will be without a dog, when he is gone and before I find another. I don't like to think about that!
Just remember, you have to share... pictures please!
Oh, does the new family member have a name yet?

Congratulations adirondackgal on getting that new puppy. It will be a wonderfully exciting time for all of you, including the pup. I sure hope you understand that "energy" can be a real handful when he gets older...unless you teach him how (and when) to curve it while he's young. (I have a chocolate labradore who was, also, an "energetic" puppy; so I know a bit about this. He is now 6 yrs old, weighs over 80 lbs and STILL IS AN ENERGETIC PUP.) Do remember to post pics...

Lucky dog. When I train dogs I always use this method. Get a 20 foot long leash. Clip to harness (harness makes it easier to control the dog and won’t come off). Go to a field or park and start walking. Walk as though you forgot you are attached to a dog. He will come to the end of the leash and be forced to follow you. You won’t be dragging him, you just won’t be letting him get more than 20 feet from you. Most dogs will follow the front of their body (harness). When he gets in front of you, change directions you get him to follow you. If he is too strong to pull him from behind, then situate yourself so you are parallel to his shoulder, then change direction. Keep changing directions. It won’t be long before you notice he is not putting pressure on the leash. He is paying attention to you and keeping within the twenty foot radius.
Do long lead work with him a couple of times a day, say twenty minutes. Train him to sit while in the house, every room. Then, work on sit on his long lead sessions. You want him to sit from where he is, not come up to you and sit. Use treats, but only as rewards.

He was already named so we will probably keep that. He will be going to obedience classes. Thanks Maura on the tips. He knows the command "sit". Our daughter and DIL work at a dog boarding facility and our DIL also does agility classes with her three dogs. We have everything the pup could need. Our daughter did an obedience class with the last dog we had. This pup is very smart so I think he will be fine. We also had a dog with high energy so we know what we are getting into. We should be picking him up tomorrow afternoon. I will try to post pics when I can.
