When I say new I mean squeaky new, lol. We picked up our hive today, bees come in 2 weeks. Looking forward to the journey.

I have always been fascinated by beekeeping, but don't think I want to go into that venture. Would love to find some local honey to sell here once I get my farm store going.

Yes, but not by mail. Locals go down to GA, help package, then drive them back up. We've heard that it's better for the bees....less time "in the box". Local Amish man makes the hives.....prices are GREAT compared to what we see in the catalogs (but we didn't know that till we "settled up"). We always try to go local when we can, so we ordered from him without asking the price (dumb move on our part, but it worked out well). He'll get all our business from here forward.
DH just finished burning the hive boxes. Instead of painting we are just torching the outside lightly then coating it with poly. It's more "us" then paint. Next, he'll work on putting the frames together.

Ohiodreamer, if you are ever over by Kidron (Lehmans), Eli Troyer is a long time friend of mine and makes woodenware and sells beekeeping supplies. If you are coming south on Kidron road you'll see a sign that says bee supplies at the first road to the left. His place is a mile down the road on the left.
Looks like we are down to 4 hives and are getting 4 more packages to add back. It was a hard winter.
Feed your bees heavily when you get them installed. They'll take what they need until nectar and pollen are available.

It has been a hard winter. In August I had 7 full size hives and 21 4 frame nucs. I have lost 2 full size hives and 16 nucs so far.
I've overwintered the nucs fine the last 2 years, this year has been rough on the bees.

Hard winter here, as well. Lost one hive, one survived.

We got our bees Sunday. DH "installed" them. We did make a few mistakes, but nothing to worry about. We dropped the queen cage into the package. DH says sticking your hand in a box of about 6,000 bees is NOT natural, lol. All in all it looks as if it went well. We will check on the queen on Wednesday....we REALLY want to peek now, but are being good and leaving them alone.
