Just got a txt from a friend, offering a bottle calf for $175. I know it's healthy (Ozark Jewels' sister raises healthy stock just like Emily), and the price is good for a Jersey cross.
We would have to let it run with the sheep and the goats. And I know he has to be fed 2x a day.
Has anyone had issues with calves running with their ungulates?

I used to do it all the time. A couple of years ago I had some Dexter cows in with the goats & also a llama.

Hm... Nick seems a little reluctant, but I think it's a good investment.

Pony, I don't know where you're located so I don't know what calf prices are like there this year. Here in my part of Arkansas Calves are selling high this year and I haven't seen one offered for less than 250 bucks.
I generally buy a calf to raise for meat but with the prices as they are I'm raising a couple of feeder pigs instead. That sounds like a heckuva' price to me.

I'd like to find a couple of heifer calves for $175 a piece. I just don't see that happening this year though, Maybe they'll go down some by next spring.

Well, it's not a heifer, but the price seemed right to me. Now that you folks have weighed in, I am sure of it.
We agreed to give it a try. Twice daily bottle feedings shouldn't be too rough, I can just get up a few minutes earlier to mix the milk replacer. (Trub's good, but dang! She can't give enough to feed a calf!)
Thanks, Everyone!

We have four on the bottle right now. Having to supplement the calves with MR a little, after I feed all the doelings. If you have extra feed it to him and save the MR !!

We ran Bubba, a Jersey X (something black) with our dairy goats last year. No issues. He did bump heads with Java, the LaMancha herd queen. Well after bottle weaning, which was at about 14 weeks, we turned him out with the beef herd. I always thought Topside over on HT did a great job with bottle calves...$175 is a bargain. I expect to get $450 for mine this year.

We're picking him up tomorrow night. Wheee!
I got two of those big honkin' bottles (made sure I got the screw on nipples, rather than those finger-bustin' "strechy" (ha!) rubber nipples.
Now to figure out if we should go with raw milk or replacer....

Good for you @pony! Good choice on the bottles too, Those stretch on types are a pain.

Brought him home this evening! Cleaned all the cow poop out of the Subaru... I'll take pics tomorrow.
