Many homes in Minnesota, including ours, are approximately 50% earth-sheltered. It's called a basement. lol true, that's basically what I tell people when trying to explain it and they look confused, it's a daylight basement with a roof on it, then the lightbulb goes off

We live in WI and last 2 homes not only had basement but the N, W and E sides are all earth bermed. Makes so much sense.

agreed, people are pretty shocked when they hear we only use roughly a cord of wood a year to heat our home, we just have a small woodstove as a heat source, with how brutal this year was we ended up using just under two cords.
