Alphabetize your spices? I will admit to being slightly OCD, but even if I wasn't, I would still keep spices alphabetically. It makes them sooooo much easier to find!

Absolutely. How do you find them otherwise. Mine are actually in metal tins with a magnet on the bottom. DH installed a metal strip so they "hang" in my pantry. I write on them with chalk and chalk tape is on the top of the lid. That way it is easy to find them and they are up high enough on a narrow shelf so that I can still store things on the shelf under them.

Great to hear I am not alone! LOL My kids tease me about it, but when I was at DD's house a few weeks ago, I happened to notice hers were accidentally in the same order!

We only have 6 that we buy, allspice, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and paprika. We don't use much, they are the little round McCormick plastic bottles that we get at Waremart. Our own Mrs. Dash mix, a homemade Italian herb mix, powdered onion and tomato. We don't use much spice, we enjoy the natural flavors of food. A little smoke, lightly salted butter, bacon grease,, brown sugar, maple syrup or Mrs. Dash is about all we need.

Not alphabetized but the labels MUST all be facing forward. My spices are categorized though. Top shelf is the baking (sweet) spices. Middle shelf is the cooking (savory) spices. Bottom is the jars of homemade dressing and spice mixes.

wow- y'all would start twitching if you saw my spice cupboard! I get mine bulk from the Amish store- and keep them in a small 3 shelf cupboard.. I have them in half pint/pint and quart canning jars- and they are literally a non organized jumble- I can find the ones I need but if DH is cooking I have to be his assistant and pull the spices for him.. I just don't have enough cupboard space to organize them the way I would like to

Is there any other way? LOL
In my house they are alphabetized. Dad's house is a jumble but it's a jumble of only 4 things. In his house I do have cupboard shelf that is dedicated to pickling/canning spices that are bulk packed.

Mine are on a couple of small lazy susans, and yes they're alphabetized. That way I can quickly find the spice or spices I'm looking for. At least, until dh needs a spice for something, that is.

Nope! They are in order of use. I have them on the lazy susans in groups of usage. Taco/chili seasonings together, spices together, pickling spices have their own spinner, then the misc. herbs and spices.

Alphabetized, four times over! I have a lot of spices, and in my lazy susan are one of those spinning spice rack things that holds 4 rows of 4 spice jars each, two small baskets with spice jars (basket of small jars and basket of large jars) and the bottom 'shelf' of the lazy susan holds my biggest spice containers (what I use the most of and buy at Gordon Foods). In each area, the spices are alphabetized. And I can often be heard muttering and rearranging jars after the other occupants of my house have used them and not put them back in the exact right space.

No.I have them in a drawer, which is really great for them -- no sunlight, no heat to diminish them. I don't even have the lids all labeled. Lazy.

Farmchix, this thread is just too funny - you should write us up in a book "What Your Spice Cabinet Reveals About You"!
So I took a look at my spinners, I find India (with some Hungarian immigrants) & Americas (plus peppercorns) on one, and baking/hot chocolate spices & extracts on the other. Salts and mustard seeds in standing corked bottles. Glass, so I color find - WYSIWYG. Rather like having full charge, what I used last is foremost.
A family cupboard is a horse of a different color.

I save the old jars and just use them to re-purpose. I love cooking, so there are a LOT of herbs and spices around here.

If I did, I would have to change the name. I also keep my clothes in my closet by color....shoes lined up....even the Hocus Pocus closet is alphabetical. Hocus Pocus closet is my essential oils and other soapmaking oils. I get real "ouchy" when someone puts something back wrong....or so I'm told.

I keep mine in groups of what I use together most often, with more frequently used toward the front. For quicker cooking and less to sort through I'm planning to switch to just keeping about 6 spice blends and a few single spices in pint jars instead once I go through some of my current stock.

It makes them sooooo much easier to find!I think it's a great idea, but I don't (hangs head in shame). I have so many herbs and spices and use most of them regularly. Trouble is, they're in containers of all shapes and sizes: some in the original store container, some in round, little plastic tubs, some in tiny, recycled jelly jars, or baby food jars.
I've tried separating them into two categories: savory and sweet but they still tend to get mixed up. Which is kind of funny because overall I'm a very tidy and organized person. Oh well.

I'm pretty much the only cook. I buy in bulk and grow my own, and put them in canning jars. None are labeled, but I know what they are! Each has a very unique fragrance and appearance. Most are in quarts, a few are in pints. Like ground dry mustard. You can only use so much.... During the rare occasions when he cooks, my poor DH has to ask for all the spices he wants to use. I'm happy to get them down for him. He knows what peppercorns look like, so he's safe there. Otherwise, he can't tell thyme from oregano. I have no idea how many jars there are in there. LOTS. But savory herbs like sage (leaf and rubbed) and rosemary (leaf and ground) are in one area, and sweet herbs or spices (cinnamon, both cassia and Ceylon), nutmeg (ground and whole), and cloves (ditto the nutmeg) are in another area. My DH can make me completely nuts by mixing them around. I think he does it just for the fun of watching me look like someone who's OCD. But that's not me! I haven't alphabetized them! I haven't even labeled them!

You guys are killing me - I'm an alphabetizer, but hubs hasn't finished building my spice rack yet. Our old place had a pullout rack that could hold over a hundred spice jars. Right now I have a large shopping bag filled to the brim with spice jars - the one I want is ALWAYS at the bottom of the bag. Sigh.

Alphabetized spices, in fact my herbal medicine box and the essential oils are all alphabetized. Clothes are color coordinated and separated by types like long sleeve, short sleeve. Fabric stash by color, craft items by type and color. Storage room has one shelf for dry goods, canned veggies, fruits, condiments etc. I even have my socks and undies organized. I wonder if next week when I plant my garden if I can alphabetize it, hmmmmm.

I guess I never thought about it. Mine are in neat rows on a stair step thingy so they can be easily reached but I buy in bulk and grow and dry my own so the containers are of different sizes. They are labeled but I just tend to put them back in the same place and I know that's where it is. I would love to find little lids that fit the miniature canning jar with a handle that is sold as spice containers. They come with the shaker lid, but I want a lid that doesn't have holes. I have about 50 of them as I like them and really want to use them for my spices and seasonings. Claytonpiano, I do like your magnet strip for the metal spice tins though. I think I can put a strip on the back of the cabinet and it will be the top row in there.

The spices in my drawer are alphabetized. The ones I grow, dehydrate & store in quart jars on my pantry shelves are somewhat alphabetized ... the lesser used ones are in the back rows (alphabetized) and the greater used ones are in the front, alphabetized. also

Some are some aren't. The ones on the spice rack hanging on the wall are alphabetized. This is my "go to" location when I'm cooking for 75% of my spice needs. The larger packages in the cupboards are not alphabetized, but I usually can lay my hands on the one I want. The 1# bags in the spice tub in the storage room are not alphabetized, either, just shoved in the tub. It's a pain when I need to pull out something to refill the kitchen containers....but it's doable.
