I'm a rabbit person! I started with Angoras (mostly German crosses) at the age of twelve and raised them for twelve years. I bred for the wool production of the Germans with the variety of colors of the English and French. I taught myself color genetics and was involved with Tan Angoras (think Dobermans/Rotties for markings). The combination of the family farm moving, a full-time job, and then getting married had me letting go of them. Last summer, I fell in love with a Broken Fawn Satin/Palomino cross youngster at the county fair. My husband agreed to get her and before long we had quite the meat herd going! We currently have 15 adults - mostly New Zealand with a Champagne d'Argent, Californian and Flemish Giant. With babies it's around 40 right now!

My rabbit population consists of a californian buck with two cal brood does. One of the does has 9 kits on her right now, the other is pregnant. I also have a young cal doe who my daughter showed at a rabbit show this weekend and it won second place in her category. Then the mini lop herd comes along; we have 3 Sr does. One of which has a litter of 4 right now, one I am trying to breed (she isn't cooperating), and one who won first place in her category at the rabbit show. We have a Sr buck and a Jr buck, the Jr also took first place at the rabbit show in his category. We also have a little Jr doe, she won third place in her category. Then my wife has a pet house bunny, part mini lop.
And as of this Friday, my wife is getting a pair of Thrianta rabbits.

I always check into the rabbit threads, I dont have any, never raised any, but I want to. I have read and reread several books. The other half of us is pretty good about raising cattle, chickens and hogs. Pretty sure she thinks they are too cute to harvest.

Among everything else that I've been involved in during my long life, rabbits were also in it for almost 10 years. Had big NZ Whites and the local IGA store had a waiting list for as many as I could supply. Maximum number on hand at one time was 82, as I recall. Worked great until drought year of 1976. Price of pellets doubled and just couldn't see doubling the price of the meat. A friend had an idea that he wanted to get into the business and made an offer that I just could not refuse. Thus ended my reign of rabbit king in this town.

Within a year, I am hoping to have at least 8-10 meat breeders; californians and NZ whites. I think that would be enough for me. A guy down the road from me has close to 200 NZ whites, I have never seen his operation, but am told it isn't that nice. I would like to check it out sometime, just to see what he has.

Well we have about 150, give or take depending on the time of year. We raise a lot of meat, and show quite a bit all year. We have mostly Cals, with a few NZW's and a whole bunch of Mini Lops LOL..also a few ND's just for fun since they are smaller for my son to show...

Our population is growing, what's the term, rabbit math??? My wife found a couple she likes, so tomorrow she is picking up a pair of thrianta rabbits. Been doing a lot of reading on them, its a newer breed, only been recognized by the ARBA since around 2005 or so. It's a meat rabbit, but a medium compact meat rabbit. Bigger than a dutch, smaller than a NZ.

I am holding off breeding too many because I have enough in the freezer right now. I think I'll take them out & can them up so I have more room in the freezer.

Fireman, I just found you on the chicken threads and now you are on the rabbit threads, between you and dba I dont need any more hobbies..okay maybe I do.. Yea---stay Busy-------I got so many things I want to do before I get to old to do them---I keep checking something else off my list. I been raising worms for a few years---kinda small scale---I think I got 12 to 14 beds. One thing I did enjoy was raising crickets----I raised Millions of crickets----My chickens LOVED that Hobby----LOL. I sure created a job with the chickens/hatching---maybe 3 jobs. The rabbits are no problem and take very little time---I got about 25(20 breeder adults) of those right now----but got another Doe due tonight.

Wally, its got to be fun. If I didn't enjoy working with rabbits and chickens, and soon to be goats, I wouldn't do it. Animals are far less frustrating to deal with than people.

You can add one more "rabbit people" to your list.
I used to breed NZ & Calies & Angora. Now I have Rex and Giant Chinchilla. Also some mini rex, but they are kind of side track that I'm not sure if I'll keep or not.
I'm working on getting them mostly off pellets and into a natural feeding program. So far it's doing pretty good, but I want them to keep eating at least a little bit of pellets.
Looking forward to reading everyones posts and sharing information while learning new things.

I am getting back into breeding, just had 3 born a little over a week ago, their eyes are starting to open, I am down to only a doe and a buck so I am hoping for a doe for a replacement and 2 bucks for food.
