I have an 03 Impala with 150,000 miles on it. The car runs great, shifts great, and have never had any real problems with it. About 15 days ago, I was sitting at the stop light at the busiest intersection in town. When I took my foot off the brake and pushed on the gas, it felt like the transmission slipped for about 2 seconds. I pulled into the gas station, and when I pulled back out, the transmission felt like it slipped again, but only extremely slightly. The fluid was full, with no leaks. Radiator and antifreeze is also fine. Since then, about 15 days, I have driven the car almost every day, and put on about 500 miles. No slips, and the transmission is shifting as it should. What is the possibility that when it felt like the transmission slipped, that the car's tire was sitting in oil...and that caused the feeling of it slipping? That intersection is really oily and dirty, and the longest light in town. Thoughts?

Without extreme abuse or babying, automagic tranny can go out anywhere from 150k to 250k. Whats horrible is rebuilds might not last beyond 5000 miles, others might last as long as the original.
Reason I wont own an automatic until that is only choice. Course cheap light duty manuals arent anything to write home about. Heavy duty transmission of any kind seems to be thing of the past.

I have had tires slip and it feels like the clutch is messing up took me quite a while to figure out what was happening
might also be the transmission oil filter is clogged a bit

Thank you for the replies!
The transmission has never been abused...not in any way. My father purchased this car new. If anyone in the world is easy on a car, it is my dad. I've never abused it either.
I'm praying that it is nothing major. I did not want to have to buy another car for a good while.

BTW, I've put on another 100 miles since I've posted this, and the transmission is shifting up and down like it should.

Has it ever had a service? Oil and filter change? May be time to drop the pan, clean the screen and a new filter....James

Whatever you do, suggest you dont let some fool power flush it. Changing fluid and filter shouldnt hurt it, but power flushing can damage seals, etc. Personally I would leave a high mile automatic untouched unless its used to regular filter/fluid changes.

I had a jeep that had about 150K on it, never had a problem with the transmission. I decided it was time to have the transmission serviced, new fluid and screen. Within 5K more miles it acted like your description of what yours did. That happened 2 or three times but quit it and I never had another problem with it as long as I kept it. If it ain't broke don't fix it and if it is think long and hard before you total your car on account of a broken transmission, that is, if you like it.

I'll have to ask dad if he did, but I don't think so. Of course, this will bring on the "don't ever change the tranny fluid and filter on a high mileage car" argument. I've heard both sides of the coin for pan drop changes. FWIW, many years ago, I had a high mileage beater front wheel drive Buick, and not knowing, dropped the pan, and changed it out, without any problems, whatsoever.

I agree, I would NEVER do a flush. Pan drop change, or nothing at all.

IF it hasn't been serviced and the screen is plugging it is not getting enough oil to keep it lubed right, will always get worse. Cleaning the screen may get oil to it in time for a long life yet. Low oil flow through an automatic transmission gets the system hot and starts burning surfaces up, those never get better. Low oil flow and heat ruins an auto transmission, biggest issue for failure. Power flush is NEVER a good idea, has to run dirty oil backwards through the pump to ever clean the screen....James
