Friend with a loft went out to find 15 dead pigeons with just their heads chewed off.
Mink? First he has to find the entry point. Will the big glue-type rat traps hold a mink?

oxankle, that would have been horrific for your friend to find. Those poor birds. Were there any left? They would have been petrified. Sure hope he finds the offender and deals to it. I feel really sorry for him.

Definitely sounds like a mink. They can get through the tiniest holes. Chicken wire won't stop them. I hope your friend finds the entrance and gets the culprit. Once successful, they will keep coming back and they just seem to enjoy killing.
Sorry your friend had to see his birds like that.

Agree with mink. Females can almost squeeze through chicken wire. I keep traps set for squirrels. Best catch I every had was a female mink a couple winters ago. She would have had fun if she got into our lofts. Saved the pigeons and got $10 besides.

I wouldn't trust a glue trap. Set a large rat trap inside a box with a couple of small openings

For land sets I used No 4 sized traps. Grabs them high and kills them. If you can find the entry they are easy pickens for a buried No. 4. Use a very light pan pressure of course. You just got one of Donks secrets.

Now as to my own varmints: I've been reporting that coons have taken the few miserable ears of corn that my crop made this year. I've been setting a live trap for the sucker for a week. Last night I got HER, a full grown vixen with an attitude. Do foxes like corn also--I thought the corn was going to marauding coons, but it was the fox that showed up in then corn patch---a hunk of pork rind hanging from the trigger pivot got her.
