You be? Yesterday a neighbor that lives 1/2 mile down our road decided to burn a trash pile. Burning trash has been illegal in Washington for over 30 years, there is a burning ban for the whole state, it has been hot and dry for the last couple of weeks, and it was windy. The fire took off, got in some trees, another neighbor going down the road saw it and called it in. There were two other fires at the same time and some of our district firefighters and equipment have been deployed to a big central Washington fire. They sent three stations, and three DNR units but were short of firefighters. Luckily the land owner had a tractor and plow and was making a fire break when the firefighters got here. We have Red Flag warnings today, hopefully there aren't any embers that didn't get put out or burning roots that could take off.
I'm glad I'm not going to have to pay those fines! The also charge to send each station when there is a fire set deliberately, there are fines for burning without a permit, burning trash, ect.

Some folks just don't believe it will happen to them, hope they think twice about doing that again!

I have watched a former neighbor light a burn pile he placed under trees "because nothing was growing there" then pour gasoline on it to get it burning faster. He was a pot head whose pot head wife left him because he "used too much."
It only takes one such idiot to bring to nothing the good sense of hundreds of others. I'm glad you all were saved from him.

mollymckee, Eeks!! Glad it seems to have been taken care of quickly! I was in GA for the past 2 weeks, but was watching my pager and the news, not to mention a fellow ff and friend in our volunteer department asking when I was to be back in WA when the red flag warning came up... I just got in last night at midnight, and I am really hoping it stays quiet for a few days so I can get unpacked and such! I would think you wouldn't have fines if you didn't do anything wrong, but on the whole I am always happy to hear that the stupid person gets to help foot the bill!

gracielagata, he did plenty wrong! DNR is almost certainly going to fine and charge him, I think Fire district 4will too. I'm guessing, from other neighbor's that have been caught burning, he will be looking at a minimum of $2000.00, and probably more. The guy across from him got fined $1300.00 a few years ago when a DNR employee happened to see him burning on a rainy day. We have a DNR guy living on our road, but he wasn't the one who reported the fire. Hopefully he will let these dopes know he lives here. Maybe they will stop the dangerous burning.

mollymckee, Good!! Is it bad that we celebrate this?! I hate when people can't be intelligent on such a simple thing to listen to! And they both did this with a DNR guy up the road?! Quite stupid....

My oh my, with that wind yesterday, you were so lucky it did not take off. I have turned in two of my neighbors for burning when there is a fire ban on.
We had smoke last night from the fire south of INchelium. Brought back memories of last summer. But no smoke today.

Really scary! Hubby is a volunteer fire fighter here and the things people do just amaze me. Really stupid. Glad nothing serious happened and they got it out!

You know what they say: You can't fix stupid! Well..... ACTUALLY, you can fix stupid, but sometimes it involves a massive dose of chlorine in the deep end of the gene pool. Unfortunately, other people usually get hurt in the process......

We are very lucky. He tried to put it out rather than call for help. If the neighbor that called it in hadn't driven by it might have had a very different outcome. We have neighborhood meetings once or twice a year and several of us have been very vocal about the fact we will report illegal burning. We are surrounded by state park and timber company land, well over 100,000 acres that may be never burned or not for years. Not only is the undergrowth dry but the duff is really thick and dry. Most of us are very careful and watchful. We have a great volunteer fire department as well that calls in air support as well as as much help as they can get. Thanks to all who volunteer to help their communities as firefighters!

About 30 years ago we had a fire here when everything was dry. Somewhere in our photo albums I have a lot of pictures of the burnt areas. It was about 12 acres that was burnt. The only trees lost were eight blue spruce ones I was getting ready to set out. They were about 16 inches tall so I laid down on the ground and took a picture of them from ground level and it looked like a real forest fire of large pines. I also have pictures of the very rusted down 55 gallon drum she started the fire in. It was down to half of it's height and from several different directions you could throw a soft ball through the holes rusted in what was left of the barrel. 18 units from four different fire departments fought hard and saved my garage and house. The fire was stopped 24 feet from this house and they got the tire fire out from the burning tires AGAINST the back wall of the wooden garage. If that garage had caught on full there would have been no way to save the house. It shook me up pretty bad when I realized how very close we came to losing it all.

MollyMckee-glad they got the fire taken care of before it did any terrible damage. We had neighbors like that...a couple different sets of them. They set leaf or trash fires going while it was quite windy. It's often rather frightening to think you are at the mercy of the thin intelligence of your next door neighbors.

It takes so little to start an out of control forest fire here. There are hundreds of thousands of acres of timber, we have very dry summers. There is a fire burning along the Snake river that was started by a campfire. Campfires are not allowed when the there is a burning ban. The campers turned themselves in, but the fire is still burning. It has burned several thousand acres of timber so far. It is so sad the devastation one careless person can cause.

Most of my neighbors are intelligent and observant, so I pretty much have to keep my stupid under wraps.
